Recruiting now - local event hosts for Sports Day in Canada!
Thank you to the organizations who submitted over 859 sporting events for CBC Sports to consider for the Sports Day in Canada television broadcast on September 18. Even if you're not chosenfor the broadcast, there are plenty of other ways your organization can get involved in Sports Day in Canada. Get involved by hosting your own local celebration event anytime during the week leading up to, and including, September 18. Join thousands of organizations across Canada and create something new, or throw open your doors to a competition, activity or event your organization is already doing-and invite other Canadians to join you:
1. Think of a sport-related event or activity that your organization, club, team or school is already doing, or could do, between September 11 and 18, 2010. If the event is already open to the public, great - all you have to do is register it on the site. If not, decide how you could open it up to the public - hold an open house, offer a free 'try-it day,' hold an athlete meet-and-greet before a competition, stage a community softball game, invite people to view a team practice or invite your local mayor to host a demonstration event of your sport. Use your imagination.
2. Post the details of your local event (contacts, description, photo etc.) on the Sports Day in Canada website at www.cbcsports.ca/sportsday as soon as possible.
3. Promote your event to the public. After August 18, the site will include free promotional tools you can download and customize: e-blasts to send to your organization's members, web banner ads to put on your website, free articles about Sports Day in Canada for your newsletter, customizable posters you can print and put up in the community, etc.
August 18. Individuals can make plans to come to your event, media can find out details and the country can learn more about your sport and your organization!
5. You will also be invited to promote your event to the local media in the 2-3 weeks leading up to September 18. Free PR templates will be available in early September for you to send out to any local contacts you have. If you know any local politicians or elite athletes or celebrities, invite them to come to your event and tell people about it!
6. Host your Sports Day in Canada event and join this national celebration of sport.
The new and improved Sogo Active
Since the fall of 2008, Sogo Active has been engaging teens to lead more active lifestyles. Presented by Coca-Cola Canada in collaboration with ParticipACTION and a network of provincial/territorial coordinators and approximately 1,300 local Community Host organizations, Sogo Active has inspired almost 13,000 Canadian youth to get moving. During the first phase of Sogo Active, over 1000 youth were selected by Coca-Cola Canada to carry the Olympic Flame in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. Plus, more than $500,000 in Sogo Active micro-grants were distributed to enable teens to increase their physical activity. New to Sogo Active for this phase are an updated look and feel and the idea of the Sogo Active Challenge - youth challenging themselves to find new reasons and new opportunities to get physically active. The new Sogo has more educational messaging and asks youth to challenge themselves to overcome the physical inactivity crisis by finding, joining or creating ongoing activities or one-time events. Check out Sogo Active for more information on the program and to register as a Community Host organization or youth. Create and join your own Challenges today!
 Join the ParticipACTION Partner Network
The ParticipACTION Partner Network (PPN) is a robust network of not-for-profit and public-sector organizations dedicated to physical activity and sport participation. ParticipACTION's belief is that the PPN will not only help support the work of individual member organizations, but will strengthen the physical activity and sport participation sector in Canada. The PPN is a formalized mechanism through which:
-
ParticipACTION can marshal resources and deploy these resources to PPN members in support of the delivery of initiatives to address the physical inactivity crisis.
-
PPN members can build a community of practice related to physical activity through collaboration and communication between stakeholders.
-
ParticipACTION can facilitate the coordination of communications and knowledge exchange across Canada, to ensure clarity of message to the general public and to help build capacity of member organizations.

If You Can't Have It All, You Can Have A MiniLori-Ann Muenzer, Olympic Champion, Author, Speaker & Trainer, provides energized, think outside your comfort zone training for conferences, organizations, business owners, and entrepreneurs. www.Lori-AnnMuenzer.com
Stopping for an early lunch at Subway in Cochrane, Alberta, the sandwich artist behind the counter said: "where're ya headed to, Miss?" With a huge grin I said, "Alaska!" "Seriously? Oh man. I hate it when you guys show up on your motorbikes and then drive away." Puzzled, I looked at him and asked, "why?" "Because you drive away and I know you're gonna have a really great time. You get to ride for the whole day if you want to. You stop anywhere you want to, and you meet the most interesting people. I wish I could do that." "Why can't you?" "Because I can't take time off of work for that long." You don't need to take two or three weeks off of work to get away. You can totally transport yourself in a few hours or one day. A change of place and pace can be enough to recharge you. Explore your backyard! I keep hearing:
"I don't have the time or money to do it."
- It doesn't have to be expensive to get away for just day, maybe two
- Plan one of your weekend days as your "get out of town" day
"I don't know where to go."
- Head off to your local provincial park or conservation area
- How about to your local park?
"I really want to go for a week but..."
- Want to do the overnight thing? Start with the weekend and take your tent along.
"Usually it's half past noon before we get going, so what's the sense in starting out?"
- So what? What's the matter with enjoying the rest of the afternoon and evening?
- Option 2: set the alarm clock to start out early.
A mini doesn't have to be short or long. It can be just a few hours. How about you:
- Assemble a picnic basket
- Go on a walk and take your camera alone
- Splash around in a kiddie pool
- Tour a museum or art gallery
- Grab your Frisbee and head to the park
- Make a kite and fly it
- Take your towel, swimsuit and suntan lotion to your local pool
- Go to a ballgame
- Pack your tent and sleep in the woods
- Visit a farm or zoo
- Head out to a new park with your volleyball, football, and badminton rackets
- Go for a drive and try to locate as many "slug-a-bugs" as possible!
Explore somewhere new. Get out and have some fun! You'll feel recharged from going somewhere new or revisiting somewhere you haven't been for a while. If you can't have it all, you CAN have a mini.

Promoting Physical Activity in Youth
Research shows that most Canadian youth do not meet the national physical activity guidelines. In addition, the research shows that girls are less active than boys and older children are less active than younger children. This highlights the need for effective strategies for increasing physical activity in youth. Educating parents about the importance of physical activity has the potential to greatly impact activity levels among children. In 2007, ParticipACTION launched a campaign targeting parents of school-aged children to inform parents of the risks of inactivity among children and youth. Generally, awareness of campaign messages results in the adoption of certain behaviours/attitudes to increase personal activity levels or that of their children.

| Q&A | |
Q - I know everyone says they are busy, but I really am and don't have time to do a long workout. How can I get the physical activity I need? Stacy A - Research supports that small bouts of physical activity accumulated throughout the day provide the same benefits as one continuous bout of activity. In fact, shorter bouts of activity may be more beneficial, because they are easier to stick to. Just remember that each activity should be at least 10 minutes in duration. |

You can help kids play. Donate $2 to the Power of Sport for Kids and receive $5 off your next purchase at Sport Chek, Sport Mart, Hockey Experts and Athletes World.
August 12 - 15
The Power of Sport for Kids is a nationwide program introduced through The Forzani Group support disadvantaged children who would benefit from the infusion of sports and activity in their young lives. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for sports, play and physical activity to deserving children who may not otherwise have the resources to take part. This is a program that benefits children and provides them with the chance to experience the joy of an active lifestyle.
In 2009, employees and customers of our stores contributed over $700,000 to fund sports equipment, enabling us to donate to over 115 groups and organizations across the country and giving these deserving kids their chance to play.
The Forzani Group believes that together we can make a significant impact on the health of Canadians as a whole by enabling more children to participate in the sports, activity and play that they otherwise may not have access to. This weekend visit a Sport Chek, Sport Mart, Hockey Experts or Athletes World store near you and donate $2 to the Power of Sport for Kids. Sogo Active - Grey 4-H Club Gets Active! In January, 2010 the Gray 4-H Club in Gray, Saskatchewan started a volleyball league with the objective of getting their members more involved in physically active. They received a youth group grant from Sogo Active and purchased 6 volleyballs and a volleyball net. They set up the volleyball court at the Gray Rink, which has a gym upstairs but hasn't been used for any organized sport for many years. The 12 youth that were involved in the activity played every Friday night and Sunday morning, and even held a week long tournament during the Easter Break. Their season finished in April, 2010, but they are looking forward to the new season starting up again this upcoming winter!
