                                                                                                                                 Move More!

Welcome to our latest E-Newsletter from:  www.participACTION.com

Message from the President
June is upon us, and the hot weather is already descending on parts of Canada.  The season of long walks, jumping off docks and fields of green is finally here!

At the ParticipACTION office, our summertime routine involves getting outside to stretch our legs, every day.  A bike ride into work, a jog with a friend at lunchtime or a stroll around the block for a coffee are all ways that we fit physical activity into our busy days.

We encourage you to take a look at your own routine, and find some room to fit more physical activity into your daily life.  Visit the park, walk a few laps at your child's soccer game or strap on some inline skates for a swift trip to the store.  Getting active doesn't require a big investment of time or money, and it doesn't have to be done all at once.  So find 10 minutes to get outside and enjoy the weather.

Slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat and step out into the sunshine!

Warmly,

Kelly Murumets

New Physical Activity Recommendations from CSEP and ParticipACTION.
On May 11, new research from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) was published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.  CSEP and ParticipACTION teamed up to use the new research, conducted over three years and funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, to educate all Canadians about the amount and type of physical activity they require.  Clarity on physical activity recommendations is needed, because according to the 2010 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card, only 27 per cent of parents know how much physical activity their children should be getting each day.

The research shows that measurable health benefits can be achieved at lower activity thresholds than previously thought.  However, Canadians should aim to exceed the minimum activity thresholds as the more variety, the more intensity and the longer the duration of the physical activity, the greater the health benefit.  Even small increases in activity can bring benefits.

Physical Activity and Arthritis

It is estimated that 17.6% of Canadians are affected by arthritis, and with our aging population, this proportion is expected to increase in the future.  The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease.  People suffering from osteoarthritis experience pain and discomfort, joint stiffness and swelling around affected joints.  A recent literature review looked at the relationship between physical activity and the development, progression and management of osteoarthritis among older adults.  While the research was inconclusive on the effects of physical activity on the development and progression of osteoarthritis, meaning that they're not sure whether being active causes or aggravates arthritis, it did show that regular physical activity has the potential to reduce pain and improve function in individuals suffering from osteoarthritis.

Q&A
Q - I was told the best time to work out is early in the morning, but I'm not a morning person.  When is the best time of day to work out?  Andrea

A - It doesn't matter when you are physically active - the most important thing is that you get active regularly.  If you are a morning person, and like starting your day at the gym, that's great.  If you prefer evening activities, that's fine too.  But remember that getting active is not necessarily about going for a run or going to the gym.  There are plenty of ways that you can work more physical activity into your day, and it doesn't have to be all at once.  Physical activity can be broken into smaller 10 minute bouts.

Success Stories
Jocelyn & Tyler's Cross-Canada Adventure
For more information, visit their website.

Tyler Ladouceur and Jocelyn Dresser have been friends since their freshman year in university. In the summer of 2010, they will cycle across Canada together, from Vancouver, BC, to St. John's, Newfoundland.  The trip has been a 'bucket list adventure' for the both of them and this past Christmas they decided to try cycling the country before their careers and lives get ahead of them.  Tyler had the wonderful idea of doing it for a charity that is valuable and representative of both of their principles.  They chose ParticipACTION -  not only for the catchy jingles of the late '80s, but because of ParticipACTION's dedication to helping Canadians live healthy and active lives.

"Traveling Canada has always been a goal of ours. It is such a beautiful country, and often gets overlooked when people are thinking of traveling. We thought 'Why not travel this great land of ours?' From the Rocky Mountains to the Maritimes, there is so much to see, and what better way to see it and experience it than on a bicycle?"

Through partnership with ParticipACTION and its national youth physical activity initiative, Sogo Active, they now have a trip-of-a-lifetime planned. What lies ahead is 7500 km of terrain that encompasses Canada from the west coast to the east coast - on a bicycle!

They are starting out on June 16 from Vancouver to travel with the rider-friendly westerly winds at their backs, and hope to reach St. John's by August 22. ParticipACTION has helped them arrange visits with various Sogo Active Community Host organizations throughout the ride, so they can share their story with young people in communities along the way.   They are committed to living and sharing the importance of physical activity, and helping young people understand the long- and short-term effects of the major inactivity crisis we are facing in Canada.
