 My Child is Always Moving!
Do you often say to yourself, "why will my child not sit through dinner?" or "I can't even brush my daughter's hair without her moving"? As parents, we have all experienced something similar and wonder if our child is the ONLY one that can't seem to sit still. Rest assured, children are movers - they are runners, jumpers, and climbers, all which are appropriate, valuable locomotor movements. Even more important, "Movement is the Key to Learning!" (Carla Hannaford, Smart Moves) The question becomes: How can we encourage learning while still developing some level of motor control? We call this "inhibitory control" - the ability to stop oneself and wait. Inhibitory Control is an important social skill and needed for turn taking. Whether in school, sports, or simply playing with another child, inhibitory control is a key development skill and it's the beginning of self-control. How can you as parents promote this at home? Try "stop and go" games such as posing and freezing like a statue, or walking around to music and then freezing when the music stops. Turn it into a game and your child will want to play over and over again - practicing self-control while giggling and enjoying time together. Children who demonstrate inhibitory control are more likely to do well in math, reading, and have confidence in social situations. Kindermusik practices this with your child from their first Village experience all of the way through their Young Child classes by guiding their motor behavior through music in a unique nurturing environment with award winning curriculum. Inhibitory Control: It's important for social skills, success in school, playing together, and playing as part of a musical ensemble, not to mention the ability to sit through dinner. |
Study Music Now for Brain Power Later!
ScienceDaily (Apr. 20, 2011) - Those childhood music lessons could pay off decades later -even for those who no longer play an instrument - by keeping the mind sharper as we age, according to a preliminary study published by the American Psychological Association.
While much research has been done on the cognitive benefits of musical activity by children, this is the first study to examine whether those benefits can extend across a lifetime, said Hanna-Pladdy, a clinical neuropsychologist who conducted the study with cognitive psychologist Alicia MacKay, PhD, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Why is this important to consider? Parents want the best for the children, and by giving your child the opportunity to study music now, you are actually benefitting them for a lifetime. This is just another reason to get started in lessons - or help your child "stick with it" - and reap the benefits of music for years to come! |
