National Stress Awareness Month!
April 2008

Greetings!

Kathy Business PhotoApril showers brings May flowers... rainbows, thoughts of Spring cleaning, and children soon to be home for the summer. With that in mind here are some hints and suggestions to help transition us into Spring.

  • April is a great time to start cleaning out cabinets and thinking about getting a healthier start for the summer. Some of you will soon have children home from school for the summer, so here are some fun activities in this newsletter for all to do that focus on balanced nutrition.
  • Since last week was the Week of the Young Child, think about the children in your life in which you can make a positive impact in their nutrition education, while having fun along the way. Try the activities included. Kids love to cook and be involved, think about training someone to help you out! If you don't have a child, think about the child in all of us that wants to come out and play sometimes.
  • This is National Stress Awareness Month, are you aware of what is stressing you out? Try taking small steps towards relieving that stress, such as convenience pre-packaged meals, organizing to relieve the clutter, take a night off and do nothing or have a gathering of long-time friends, or taking a walk. We have had some beautiful days to play outside.

 Family Health Tips

  • Encourage children to help family shop and cook - Children who are involved in the process are more likely to try items.
  • Have family meals at the dinner table - Studies show that those who eat as a family, the children are less likely to start inappropriate behaviors (smoking, alcohol, etc.).
  • Do family fun hours - Go to park, take a walk, play tag/hide 'n' seek.
  • Make healthy 'to go' choices when picking up fast food  - Add milk/juice to meals and think about the colors in a rainbow when choosing foods.

Noah's Rainbow Salad

Try this on a rainy day! Discuss the colors of a rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Create a fruit salad matching fruit colors to the colors in a rainbow. Use this opportunity to count, measure and talk about tastes.

  • 1 pint of blueberries
  • 1 pint of strawberries (or apples, watermelon, cherries)
  • 1 cup of purple grapes (or plums)
  • 1 orange (or cantaloupe, peach)
  • 1 banana (or pineapple)
  • 1 honeydew (or green grapes, apple, kiwi)
  • Cool whip (or vanilla yogurt for topping)
