Indy Hour: Equal Opportunity Under Assault

Poor Richard's Bookstore, 320N Tejon St.

Join Citizens Project's Executive Director Barb Van Hoy for a discussion of the deceptively-titled "Colorado Civil Rights Initiative," a proposed constitutional amendment likely to be on the Colorado ballot in November 2008. It would eliminate many of the programs that grew out of the civil rights movement that help provide equal opportunity to women and people of color. Affirmative action programs would essentially be banned under this measure, even math & science programs for girls, culturally-appropriate tutoring for struggling minority students, and health programs aimed at underserved communities. Come and learn more about a proposed alternative ballot measure that would preserve these vital programs.

Victory for Voting Rights in Colorado!

Last week two bills were killed in the state legislature that would have created unnecessary barriers to the right to vote for qualified citizens. Citizens Project issued an Activist Alert urging people to contact their legislators, and helped organize the El Paso County Voting Rights Coalition which sent a letter to legislators urging them to defeat these ill-conceived measures. Unfortunately our El Paso County Republican legislators voted for these measures. For more information, see the voting rights section of our web site. If you're not our Activist Network email list, you can sign up here. We can make a difference when we make our voices heard!

This Year in Civil Rights

Progress has been made, but the work continues...

From the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. (LCCR)

The 110th Congress opened with great promise and opportunity for continued progress on civil rights issues.  However, the first session of this Congress ended with more gridlock, hyper-partisanship, and few solutions to today's problems of inequality of opportunity for all Americans.

We still have important work to do.

As Congress returns for its second session - and as our country contemplates the elections of 2008 - LCCR and LCCREF are pleased to share with you a series of resources that preview the priority civil and human rights issues of 2008, review activity of 2007, and allow you to note how your representative and senators voted on key civil rights issues.

The Voting Record documents how each representative and senator cast his or her vote on some of the most important civil rights issues of 2007, including voting rights, affirmative action, immigration, nominations, education, hate crimes, employment, health, housing, and poverty.

The Civil Rights Monitor provides more in-depth information on the important civil rights issues of the day and briefly reviews activity in the executive branch, courts, and states, as well as relevant LCCREF activities.

The White House Project Training for Women

Go Run will equip you, the future political leader, with the skills you need to run and win. This training demystifies the political process and inspires a richly diverse group of women to enter the leadership pipeline. Go Run provides the nuts and bolts of running for political office - communications, fundraising, and campaigning - the skills it takes to be an effective leader in your community today and the elected official of tomorrow.

Comments from past Go Run Trainees:

"Go Run stripped away all my doubts about running for office and replaced them with tools, networks, and resources to drive an exceptional campaign."

"The Go Run training was such an intensive weekend of inspiration and motivation. Now I encourage my fellow advocates to move from marching on the steps of the capitol to taking a seat inside."

"It was also very inspiring to talk with so many other women who had or are thinking about running for office. It made it feel like running for office could be something 'normal.'"
