ANNUAL CLEAN MARINA AWARDS AND NATIONAL MARINA DAY IN AUGUSTnatmarday09
August 8th the Association of Marina Industries will sponsor "National Marina Day." The event is designed to educate politicians, civic leaders, and the public about the important role marinas play as family-friendly gateways to boating and stewards of the environment.  Click the link above to learn how your marina can take part.

DNR will host the annual Maryland Clean Marina Awards luncheon in the week leading up to National Marina Day in support of this special event. The following marinas, certified since August 2008, will be recognized at this year's event:  Annapolis Maryland Capital Yacht Club, the Annapolis Yacht Club Sailing Center, the Annapolis City Dock, the Gunpowder Neck Boat Club (at Aberdeen Proving Ground), Mill Creek Marina (Naval Station Annapolis), Nanticoke Harbor (Nanticoke), National Harbor  Marina (Oxon Hill), West Basin Marina (Patuxent River NAS), and the Yacht Basin Co. (Annapolis).  Congratulations to the Award recipients.
SHRINK WRAP RECYCLING 2009
Used shrink wrap was collected for recycling from mid April through June 12, 2009.  Many thanks to all the marinas, boatyards, yacht clubs and boaters who participated!  We should have a final talley of how much was collected in a few weeks.

Mondo Polymer, a company that reuses the material in manufacturing its products, sent trucks to marinas throughout Maryland to collect the used shrink wrap.  Reports are that the system worked even better than last year.  Thanks again to all who participated.
Greetings!

The new Clean Marinas used the Clean Marina Guidebook and Checklist, and worked with DNR staff to fine-tune their operations.  They also passed a site inspection by DNR staff and the manager of another Clean Marina.  Certifications are good for three years when marinas must be re-certified.

Program materials and a list of all 137 certified facilities in Maryland can be found on the Clean Marina website.
Liquid Waste Disposal Options

Know the Options for Your Customers

Marinas and boatyards that do not recycle oil and antifreeze, should keep a list of free public collection tanks posted for customers and contractors. Just click the link above, select your county, and print the list.

To help customers deal with stale gas, old paints, and other hazardous materials, the Maryland Department of the Environment provides free "household hazardous waste" collection days in most counties.  Marinas and boatyards should share this schedule with their customers.  Individual boaters can take their waste to these events free.  However, a business (e.g., marina) must pay a licensed waste hauler to remove hazardous waste from their facility.  More information about hazardous waste handling at marinas can be found in Chapter 8 of the Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook
compostLots of Fish Being Cleaned at Your Marina?

A simple, low cost way of dealing with the waste from fish cleaning stations is composting.  A how-to booklet on this subject is available from the Louisianna State Univesity Ag Center.

Many marinas have fish cleaning stations for customers.  Waste from these stations should not be dumped into creeks or rivers because decomposition removes oxygen in the water, needed for fish and other marine life.
