Four New Clean Marinas!

Cedar Hill Marina (Salisbury), Chesapeake Yacht Club (Shady Side), Riverside Marine (Essex), and Clark's Landing Boat Sales (Shady Side) have been certified as Clean Marinas. Together they bring the total number of certified Clean Marinas and Clean Marina Partners to 124!  This represents 20 percent of the estimated 600 marine facilities in Maryland.

Cedar Hill Marina is operated by Wicomico County Department of Parks and Recreation and is located within a quiet park on the Nanticoke River.  Pictured above are (L) Rick Konrad,  Superintendent of Parks for Wicomico County and (R) Greg Rickards, County Harbormaster.  To meet the award criteria they implemented pollution prevention rules, started a recycling program, and assembled a spill-response kit and emergency plan.  They also began collecting used fishing line for recycling.

Chesapeake Yacht Club, in Shady Side, has 142 slips and a busy fuel dock.  The club's manager and commodore reviewed required permits and plans and increased the education and outreach provided to club members regarding fueling, sewage handling, and maintenance.  They also marked their storm drains "Don't Dump--Drains to Chesapeake Bay" to prevent any unwanted discharge.

Riverside Marine is a family-run boat dealership and marina on Back River in Baltimore County.  In between servicing and selling boats, maintaining a busy marina, and expanding operations, they made time to complete the Clean Marina process. Over six months, they made big strides in the outward appearance of the recycling tanks and shop area while greatly reducing their risk for fire or spills.

Clark's Landing, in Shady Side, also made time to follow through on the Clean Marina process while building a new show room and office.  General Manager Nancy Pack followed through on making sure pump-out waste is properly handled, staff is trained, and was eager to add signs promoting the facility as a certified Maryland Clean Marina.

All the new facilities are commended for their determination to earning the Award and, more importantly, reducing pollution to protect our waterways.

Pollution Prevention Practices for Winter
Winter may mean shorter office hours and a quieter boatyard, but this is also the time of year to reflect and prepare for the new year.

For instance, was there a pattern of employee mistakes or mishaps in the past season or two?  Have many customers offered the same suggestion or walked in with the same question?  Now is the time of year to put ideas into action.

The Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook recommends regular staff training, preparing current, written emergency response plans, and maintaining outreach to customers and outside contractors to keep a marina running smoothly. The appendices of the Guidebook offer: sample contract language, a sample emergency response plan, and an employee training guide.  To request a hard copy of the Guidebook contact [email protected] or call 410-260-8773.  Guidebooks and other materials will also be distributed at the upcoming Clean Marina Workshops (see article at left).

The University of Florida Sea Grant has an excellent template for preparing emergency response plans for many different situations.  The "Panic Preventer File" (document no. SGEB 045) is available for $15 at http://www.flseagrant.org/library/publications/index.htm#Subject_Index
Simply scroll down to "Waterfront Communities" to preview or order the template.

While winter is the quietest time of year, good marina management requires thinking ahead and being prepared for emergencies.  Time and effort spent beforehand can save untold costs in the event of an emergency.

Recycling Grants--Last Call!

The Maryland Clean Marina Initiative received funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a Marine Debris Pollution Prevention project in October 2006.  In addition to funding fishing line recycling at state park boating facilities and launching a Maryland Clean Boater Program, the grant aimed to provide cost-share grants to marinas to start recycling solid waste.  This project closes in February, 2008.

For a limited time funds remain available to assist marine facilities to start a solid waste recycling program (e.g. aluminum, plastic, glass).  Cost-share grants will reimburse selected marinas for the purchase of recycling collection bins.  Facilities that accept the funding are then responsible for having the materials recycled.  Certified Clean Marinas can receive up to 75 percent cost-share reimbursement.  Facilities that are not certified can receive up to 50 percent cost-share reimbursement.

All grant applications must be received by January 11, 2008 and equipment must be purchased by February 15th, 2008.  (Funding can not be used retroactively to fund containers already purchased or past recycling fees.  The intent is to help marine facilities that are not recycling to start a program.)  For more information or to request a grant application, contact [email protected] or call Donna Morrow at 410-260-8773 or toll free in Maryland 877-620-8367, x8773.
