 Blood Donation Guidelines:

To Donate Whole Blood:

  • You must be at least 17 years of age.
  • You should weigh 110 pounds or more.
  • You must be in overall good health. You can donate every eight weeks.
  • Before donating blood, you should drink plenty of fluids and eat a meal or snack. Do not drink an excessive amount of caffeinated beverages. Please continue to take prescribed medications.

Did you Know:

More than 4.5 million American lives are saved each year by a single, selfless act--donating blood. In fact, just one pint of blood can help save up to three lives.

Although 60 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, only 5 percent actually do.

Community blood and marrow drive ...

A community blood drive and marrow registration drive will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at the Johnston Senior Center, 1291 Hartford Ave. The drives are sponsored by the Johnston Senior Center, the Town of Johnston, the Department of Recreation, Johnston Senior High School, North Central Chamber of Commerce and Johnston FOP Lodge 16, and are being held for Daniel Shepard, 8, a Johnston resident and student of the Providence Center, who has autism and was diagnosed in February with leukemia. To register to be a marrow donor, you must be aged 18 to 60, in good health, give a swab of your cheek cells for marrow typing and be willing to help anyone you may match; people are also asked to bring their insurance cards. For more information, call the Rhode Island Blood Center at 800-283-8385, ext. 720, or visit www.marrow.org. The cost of testing is free, paid by health insurance or by Michael's Fund of Fall River.
