Greetings!

If you haven't seen it yet, check out our new website (
www.airpack.com). You now have the capability to request quotes online for all our services - crating, packing and training.  Just be sure to refresh your browser to display all the new content. The re-design of the website was Manny Vazquez's final project for Airpack.  After 3+ years with us, Manny was presented with an opportunity to move back to Florida and be closer to family.  He will be missed by the Airpack staff and the entire Baltimore logistics community.  We all wish him well in his future endeavors.

Lithium Batteries

On August 10, 2009 IATA released yet another revision to the Transport of Lithium Metal and Lithium Ion Batteries.  In this recent release are new revisions and charts to assist you in preparing your lithium batteries shipments for transportation.  If you ship lithium batteries this guidance document is a must read.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA, the largest pilots union in North America) recently called for the US Department of Transportation to issue a temporary ban on shipment of lithium batteries as cargo on both all-cargo and passenger aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board called for lithium batteries to be classified as dangerous goods following an incident in 2006 in which a shipment of lithium batteries caught fire aboard a UPS DC-8 freighter in flight. The crew landed safely in Philadelphia and escaped with minor injuries, but the plane was heavily damaged and most of the cargo was destroyed. Since then, the FAA has documented 26 other incidents involving lithium batteries, including three in the past two months. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA, a part of the DOT) says it is working on a rulemaking to regulate lithium batteries as dangerous goods, but ALPA feels the pace of that work is too slow and has called on the PHMSA to "immediately issue a temporary prohibition on the carriage of lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries as cargo on passenger and all-cargo aircraft," with the ban to remain in place until the rulemaking process is concluded."

The Airforwarders Association (AfA) and Airpack are monitoring this situation and will keep you informed

"The Lithium Battery Mess Continues"

Effective August 25, 2009, PHMSA is now allowing persons who offer lithium metal batteries to implement lithium metal and lithium ion batteries as specific proper shipping names. The separate shipping descriptions may be used for both domestic and international air transportation, as well as all other modes of transport.  Provisions for "Contained in equipment" & "Packed with equipment" are also included.

PHMSA would like shippers to be able to use the international lithium battery shipping descriptions for the domestic portion of transportation of lithium batteries even though the shipping descriptions have not been adopted into the HMR. PHMSA should adopt a new rulemaking for the safe transportation of lithium batteries and is considering adoption of the international shipping descriptions for lithium metal and lithium ion batteries.
Airpack will continue to cover the continued lithium battery saga from time to time in up coming newsletters.
