HOT HAZMAT TOPIC
Lithium Batteries
Currently, lithium batteries and their related electronic components are on the FAA "hit list" for compliance in transportation by all modes, especially by air. Airpack's knowledge of the current regulations & our readiness to comply with the dramatic changes that have taken place for lithium batteries allows you the best selection in properly packaging this type of commodity.
Lithium batteries can pose a big risk, if not packaged and documented properly. Click on the links listed below which illustrate incidents involving lithium batteries and how volatile they are in transportation.
Articles:
Videos:
After reviewing the above articles & videos, can you see the big concern? IATA has published six (6) new Packaging Instructions governing lithium batteries in the 2009 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, 50th Edition. They have also provided a Guidance Document - Transport of Lithium Metal & Lithium Ion Batteries click here to view this document.
Because there is a lot to the regulations surrounding Lithium Batteries we have added a new section to our Airpack Study Guide to help our students with better clarification on these regulations.
At What Cost?
Did you know that the fines related to hazmat incidents can be very costly?
If an employee is not properly trained, if packages or documentation are not properly prepared and an incident occurs; it can be very costly to the company responsible. Violations surrounding lithium batteries can range anywhere from $6,000-$600,000. Obviously, a huge price to pay for something that can be prevented by taking the proper measures. |

Thank you for making the2009 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations 50th Edition Update Class a Success
To help prepare and assist the transportation community for important changes to the air transport regulations, Airpack held 2009 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (50th Edition) Update Classes on December 12th, 18th, and 19th in Baltimore, MD location and on December 16th and 17th at our Charlotte, NC location. We had a great turn out and would like to commend those of you who attended in preparation for the new 2009 IATA regulations that went into effect on January 1, 2009. We hope that the information we provided you helped to prepare your shipments for the new year, and that it has prevented, or at least minimized, the number of frustrated (bounced) shipments and/or misinterpretations of the new 2009 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. As a result of the successful classes we will be holding similar courses at the end of the 2009 year before the 2010 regulations go into effect. Please keep watching for further information during the last half of the year.
