A Message from Myra!

As we come to this time of the year I am always so excited!  I love the smell of fall, the quality of the light and of course the changing of the colors.  Santa Fe is so exquisite as the Aspens change to golden yellow.  I am so grateful to be surrounded by such beauty, both in life and in dance.

This time of year is the start of our SEEDs after-school programs.  Pomegranate Studios offers the finest instruction in Middle Eastern dance to our Seedlings, ages 6-10, Little SEEDs, ages 10-14, and our award-winning SEED program for young women 14-18.  These programs begin the second week in September.  Sign up now!

We are thrilled to be the featured performers at the Renaissance Faire, September 19 and 20, again this year.  My family helped to start the early Faires in California and some of my fondest memories as a child revolve around those experiences. We've prepared some spectacular shows.  As always we will be roving, roaming and dancing all over the Faire, but this year we will have two main stage shows, 12 and 2 pm, and one second stage show, 4 pm, each day.  Please come enjoy the Faire and visit us down below in the trees for a little shade and to say hello!

We are also very excited to perform for Pumpkin Fest, October 2.  We will have a booth and will be roaming and performing on the main stage at 2pm.  Come check it out.  This should prove to be another fabulous event for the whole family!

October 24 and 25 in Albuquerque at the South Broadway Cultural Center Mosaic will perform and I will teach a workshop. The workshop features a classical Egyptian style choreography to  Nebtidi Mnain El Hikayan  by Mohammed Abdul Wahab.  All the proceeds of this event will be given to scholarships for SEEDs girls.

There are so many performances and events in the next three months please check the calendar for these fabulous upcoming events!  COME HAVE FUN WITH US!

Myra Krien and her SEEDS Program

"She walked as if her dancing never stopped."

                                                                  --W. Davis

Myra Krien has a quality when she teaches and when she performs that is magnetic, as though possessed by some powerful but benevolent spirit. She is someone who can command a classroom or a stage by her mere presence, before she speaks, before she dances. But it is filled with joy and beauty, this presence. This is not ego, on her part, not selfishness -- making everyone else look like ordinary mortals -- this is just her BEING when she is teaching or performing. You read sometimes of famous people like this: while performing they are the most magnificent creature you have ever seen. You cannot look away. And then, when they come to dinner, they may or may not shine, but it is a disappointment no matter what, because you come face-to-face with their humanness. They are not human while performing -- they are electric.

Truly magnificent and inspiring teachers are rare. In order to be a great teacher, you need to excel in your chosen field, master your medium, take your medium further, and communicate clearly, and with patience and joy, everything you know about your art. You cannot hold back from your students, because to hold back is to cheat the art. But more importantly than any of this, you need to embody what your art stands for. You need to live it. You need to BE it. Only in this way, can a student really, somatically, take in the teaching. The teaching, in the end, is not through words and examples and corrections -- though all of that is important and necessary. The teaching is, in its essence, through the body. This is especially true in dance, but it's true in all the arts. The brush stroke of a painting, the breath of a spoken poem, the motion of hands on drums -- in order to accomplish these things on a high level, you must be relaxed, you must know yourself, know who you are, and have the ability to share it. This is what Myra Krien embodies. And this is also what Myra teaches in her SEEDS program.

This self-awareness and self-acceptance is important for any woman, but especially teenagers, which is what the SEEDS program was created for. Myra teaches them American Tribal Style belly dance, and in the same program, she teaches them personal and social skills that will empower them to become confident, independent and successful women.  She uses dance as the medium that allows everyone to come together, to work and perform together. The dancing promotes trust and self-knowledge. It is never about competition, as other dance forms, and so much of our society is. Instead, through ATS, Myra builds a community of fellow dancers, and teaches them to trust and support themselves and their fellow dancers. Through journaling, writing exercises, and talking circles, the SEEDS program teaches the girls how to listen to their own voice, respect everyone else's voice, and figure out and accomplish their goals. She helps them to access their innermost potential.

This innermost potential -- we all want to access that within ourselves. I think of this as a small seed of daring within us. If allowed to grow, that tender small shoot will transform into a blossoming tree, full of life. If not allowed to grow, or snipped while trying to grow -- a woman could lose access to her innermost self for many many years. I think of the SEEDS program as the place where a young woman will find that seed, and nourish it within herself, preparing and strengthening herself for when she is that tall, blossoming, full-of-life tree. In very practical ways, the SEEDS Program teaches the young women to figure out how to access who they really are.  Myra invites prominent guests in to speak about their careers and how they accomplish their goals; she discusses finances and teaches the students how to manage money, find work, and work hard. She discusses such topics as discipline, work ethics, creativity, and competition. In the talking circles, the students learn how to really listen to one another, and learn that essentially, we all have similar fears and concerns, desires and needs, and yet also, we are each unique, and have some importance here on earth. SEEDS is a celebration of this, a way to celebrate others and themselves.

Myra Krien, in the end, is merely human. But through tremendous hard work and dedication, through endless hours of committing herself to creating this extensive program, she has put in a super-human effort. She has spent years creating various fundraising avenues so that girls who can't afford to attend SEEDS attend anyway. There are endless accounts from the girls, mostly of this nature: "I have never felt this secure and happy with myself and it's all due to SEEDS."  Or, "SEEDS has the power to change lives, because it gives its participants the power to change themselves; and it is a rare gift to find oneself in such a beautiful place, surrounded by such beautiful people, and to know that you are beautiful too."

I think the real gift that Myra gives to these girls, and the SEEDS program is designed to give, is exactly that: the power and knowledge to fully accept themselves, and also the power to change themselves into whoever they want to become. Part of the way we perceive reality is related to how we perceive our bodies, thus, if we change our perception of our bodies, we can change our perception of reality. It is a gift that cannot be given unless you are grounded and spiritual enough to provide not just the context, but the example of how to embody who you are with grace and love, thus allowing everyone to embody their unique selves with confidence. The SEEDS program achieves just this.

In the next part of this article, I will be discussing Myra's Teacher Training for SEEDS, a program that is expanding SEEDS to all parts of the country, and her newly evolved SEEDS program for Adults. Until then, as Auden says, "Dance till the stars come down from the rafters! Dance, dance, dance till you drop!"

My experience attending the Pomegranate SEEDS Teacher Training June 2009
Or
"What I Did On My Summer Vacation"
by Christine Demarais, Burlington Vermont

A couple of years ago I got an email announcement "out of the blue" for the Pomegranate SEEDS teacher training in Santa Fe, NM. I was hooked by the beautiful photos and graphics, and went to the Mosaic Dance website to find out more. What I saw and read on the Pomegranate SEEDS page blew me away. This program looked wonderful!  It seemed to be the perfect combination of my love of Tribal Bellydance with my desire to be of service, especially to teen girls.

In addition to having been a "troubled teen" myself, I have worked in Youth Services at the public library in Burlington for over thirteen years, and have raised a daughter into young adulthood. I know how hard it can be to make one's way through those challenging teen years, and I have always wanted to share the joy and healing I have found through Bellydance.

It took me a couple of years to get myself to the place where (financially and personally) I could make the trip, but in the early morning on June 3rd I set off for New Mexico from Vermont. After a long day of changing planes and airports, as my plane flew in over Albuquerque, I almost couldn't contain my joy and excitement. The drive to Santa Fe was easy and I marveled over the beautiful landscape, so strikingly different from the Northeast. I kept saying to myself:
"I love it, I love it!"

The next day I met Myra and the other participants at Pomegranate Studio. We gathered in the dance studio, introduced ourselves and told a bit of why we were there. I very shortly felt at ease with Myra and the group.   I felt we all shared the love of this special dance form and the desire to be of service and to help change our world for the better.

Through the coming days, as we danced ourselves silly, shared personal stories, laughed, shed tears and discussed ethics, philosophies and the "nuts and bolts" of administering the SEEDS program, we all became closer. I feel as if I have nine brand-new, amazing, intelligent, talented, compassionate, supportive, good, good friends all over the country. The last day we met, many tears were shed and hugs exchanged.

And Myra, what can I say about Myra?  Brilliant, beautiful, talented. A powerhouse of ideas and inspiration. Generous to a fault. An incredible teacher. She has paved the way with her Pomegranate SEEDS program; "broken ground" and done all the hardest work, so that those of us who follow in her footsteps will be able to set up this wonderful, life changing program a little easier.

I have come away from this training fired up, inspired, and feeling as though I actually will be able to do it. With Myra's advice and support, and the support of my fellow SEEDS teachers, I will be able to overcome obstacles that may come my way. Look for "Red Clover SEEDS" in the fall of 2010! (The Red Clover is Vermont's state flower)

Thank you Myra! Thank you Kara, Jade and Oakley! Thank you Pomegranate Studio! Thank you Alisa, Ben, Cari, the Joannas, Mary, Melissa, Rebecca and Stacey! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Another heartwarming letter submitted by Stacey Ennis:

I stand on the whole Field of Dreams philosophy of, "If you build it, they will come". My name is Stacey Ennis, and I am establishing a SEEDs program in Roswell, New Mexico. I had been aware of Pomegranate SEEDs during my time as a performing member of Roswell's Troupe Farashi from 2004 to 2007. Shortly after my son was born in 2008, my desire to begin a program in Roswell had been renewed and I checked into the training. I had just missed the 2008 training, so I promptly signed up for the 2009 training. I began teaching a small class in the fall of 2008 because the troupe was no longer in existence, and as many new mothers could sympathize, I needed to get out of the house for some much needed sanity and 'me time'! During the year that I had to wait for the next training, I worked on honing my teaching skills as well as begin to make contacts and build support for the program. I began talking to various people in the community and educating them about the program. I was able to secure a great little space at the local recreation center and they have been so supportive and excited to have the program come into their building. They have even paid a portion of the training tuition!
When I finally attended the SEEDs teacher training this past June, it was beyond everything I could have imagined! It was six intense, exhausting but beautiful days of dancing and talking and learning and listening. It essentially was a mini SEEDs program for the SEEDs teacher trainees.  My fellow SEEDs teacher trainees were amazing people and we all were united with not only a love and passion for ATS, but the goal of establishing such a worthwhile program in our own communities. Myra was so generous with her knowledge and experiences and I will forever be thankful to her to have been included in such an amazing and life changing experience. She had not only given me the tools to become a SEEDs instructor, but she has also shown me how to be a better teacher. The curriculum she provides her SEEDs teachers is brilliant and makes so much sense. Attendance in my regular classes has grown and my instruction has become more structured and clearer.
Myra has created such a beautiful energy in her work, and has inspired me in the creation of my own, what I named Sundarii Dance. Sundarii is Sanskrit for 'beautiful'. My SEEDs then, will be the Sundarii SEEDs. My Sundarii SEEDs program will begin August 25th, 2009. I am currently working with a local printing company for my literature about the program, of course, using Myra's materials that she graciously sent us all home with as my template. I have access to free advertisement through our local newspaper and radio stations because of the recreation center where the SEEDs program will be housed. I am slowly getting all the details sorted out like, "Pillows! I need pillows!" Or the impossible of trying to talk Saroyan into wholesale prices. Oh, and of course girls for the program, yes, that would be important. I have none yet, but Myra has provided me the foundation, it WILL be built, and they WILL come.
