June 2009

Greetings everyone!  We are a little behind here with our newsletter because so many exciting and amazing things have been happening!

Invader's of the Heart - One Love
Spring brought us to the culmination of our annual production, Invaders of the Heart, One Love.  This extravaganza was a full year in the making.  I was so inspired after last year I went to work immediately on One Love.  The show was a kaleidoscope of different dance forms from all over the world fused with belly dance.  Its aim was to show the diversity, flexibility, creativity and adaptability of belly dance.  The show met
with rave reviews and I personally felt it was a great success on every level.  A montage will be available for viewing on our website in June and DVDs will be available as well.

Spirit of the Tribes - Fort Lauderdale, FL
Directly following the show eight of us left for Spirit of the Tribes in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  This was an amazing event!  Truly the best Tribal and Tribal Fusion
event I have ever attended.  Maja, the producer is a super-heroine of organization and magical artistry.  The workshops were of unprecedented quality and the shows were extraordinary.  It was amazing to share the stage with artists from all over the world and of such renown and caliber.  Arishlam of Puerto Rico was a master of choreographic and dramatic genius. Unmata amazed us with their precision, humor and innovation; Amy
Sigil is a brilliant visionary.  Queen Harish of India was magnificent as well as Sashar Zarif of Iran/Canada. Kiki Kwuan, an amazing dance artist visiting all the way from
Taiwan, delighted with her fusion of the poetry of classical Chinese dance with tribal.  From Brazil, Nanda Najla presented, with such beauty and poise, her fresh fusion of Tango and Tribal.   Echan and Milla from Japan were simply unbelievable.  I am ecstatic to report that Mosaic shone brightly that evening to roaring applause, putting our beloved Santa Fe on the map for excellence in the art of belly dance.  Not only was the event a tremendous success, but also staying in Fort Lauderdale
was an unexpected treat.  The beaches were beautiful, the ocean warm, the accommodations and proximities easy, fantastic seafood and extraordinary nightlife were
abundant.  It was by all accounts an amazing experience.  Heather and Grace kept saying, "This is life-changing!" I'm so glad that it was and I hope that I'll be invited back next
year, so I can bring the whole gang.  It's a not-to-e-missed event!  Go Maja and hurray for her "Spirit"!

SEEDs National Teacher Training
Now that I'm back we are turning our attention to a summer full of FUNdraising for SEEDs and the SEEDs teacher Training.  This weekend June 4-9 marks the third
annual teacher training with eleven participants coming from as far as Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, Chicago, and as close by as Nevada, Arizona and our very own Roswell, New Mexico.  It thrills me to think that there will be a SEEDs program in Roswell.  It has been my dream that there would be SEEDs programs throughout my home state.  Here's to making that dream a reality!
DVDs
March saw the release of my Tribal-Ex DVD series created for teachers and students alike.  They offer a clear curriculum, concise instruction and an excellent
workout.  There are sections on posture, anatomical technique, support exercises, tons of clearly broken down and instructed movements, stretching and zills.  Now that my first four DVD's have made their debut and everyone seems to be getting a lot out of them I
am moving on to the next.  This summer will see the completion of three more.  The Breathtaking Veil Workshop, Sexy Hip Circles Workshop and Belly Baile Combinations will be available in September.  In the fall I hope to complete my second teacher manual,
this time for Oriental technique and release the set of DVDs that will accompany it.

Summer Performances and Sohini Das with Awakenings Dance Company of India
Please keep your eye on the calendar as Mosaic Dance Company takes the city by storm this summer!  Some of our favorite upcoming events include The SF Reporter
Party, June 17 at 7:30 at the SF Convention Center on Marcy St. and the not-to-be-missed CD release party of our very own homegrown band Pigment, June 26, 9pm at El Corazon on Guadalupe St.  On July 18, Mosaic takes to the Plaza stage for our favorite mid- summer event Mono Mundo, a kaleidoscope of the SF dance scene, from 1-3pm.   In July, the 7-9, the extraordinary Tamalyn Dallal brings us her Back Roads America Book, Film and Dance Tour, 40 Days and 1001 Nights, look for details! And finally, my personal favorite, Mosaic performs all weekend long September 19 and 20 at the SF Renaissance Faire at Rancho de Las Golondrinas!  There are many more so don't forget to check the calendar regularly at mosaicdance.net to get your belly dance fix!
Last year Pomegranate Studios was blessed with the arrival of Fullbright scholar
Sohini Das of India.  Here in Santa Fe, teaching at Monte del Sol High School, Sohini also taught classes in her contemporary style of Indian dance at Pomegranate and
choreographed a beautiful piece for this year's Invader's of the Heart, One Love.  On Friday, June 12, at 7pm, Sohini will be joined by three of her dancers from her company Awakenings and the Mosaic Dance Company at Pomegranate Studios to present Classical, Folkloric and Contemporary dances of India and the Middle East.  The cover charge is only $10 and the proceeds will go to support 6 young women from Monte del Sol going to India on a cultural exchange trip.  On Sunday, June 14, from 11am - 2pm, don't miss this incredible opportunity to study with Sohini!  She will give a three-hour workshop in her accessible and exquisite style of dance.  Entrance is $40 in advance and $45 at the door.  It isn't often we are offered, as dancers in Santa Fe, an opportunity to study with someone so gifted and from India, so don't miss out on this beautiful experience!

SEEDs FUNdraiser - Pomegranate Bazaar-Membership Drive and Party at Skotia
SEEDs NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEEDs needs your help more than ever!  This will be the ninth session of SEEDs, Self Esteem Empowerment and Education through Dance, A Youth Mentorship Program
for Social Change, for young women ages 15-18, IF we can raise the funds.  Help us say YES WE CAN!  SEEDs is in trouble and needs your help!
History.  The first six years SEEDs operated out of Pomegranate Studios entirely at the personal expense of Myra Krien.  The program was FREE to the young women
who came and Krien paid for the program's advertising, rent, teaching and administrative expenses.  In addition, she gave countless hours of her time to these young women, whenever they needed and needed it they did.  In 2005, exhausted and ready to quit, Krien told the Santa Fe community she was done and could not go on offering this vital program.  In this audience a person of tremendous generosity and vision stepped forward.
The Pond Foundation soon decided to gift SEEDs with the necessary assistance to become its own 501-C3 and a one-time gift of start-up funds.  In 2006, SEEDs received its provisionary non-profit status from the IRS.  At this time a Board of Director's was formed and fundraising efforts began.  Since then the organization has continued to struggle financially.  This year the fundraising efforts were intensified more than ever.
After hours and hours of effort there was some success and $19,000 was promised from different sources.  The recent economic crash deeply affected these sources and all funding was lost, leaving SEEDs without any funds to end the year or to continue forward.
The Future. The future of SEEDs is again in the hands of the Santa Fe community. It is possible that SEEDs could continue next year, but not without some financial assistance.  Given the current economic climate we are planning two FUNdraising events that we hope make it easy and comfortable for everyone to unite and
play a small part while having a lot of FUN!  Please come out and support this vital, life- changing program.  Last year we hosted our first Pomegranate Bazaar this event was so much fun and successful we decided to do it again!  Here's how it works...First, purge and donate,
for a tax write-off, items you are ready to get rid of by dropping them off at Pomegranate Studios prior to the event.  If the items are larger please bring them the morning of the event.  Second, show up and have FUN, Sunday, June 28, 10am - 3pm!  There will be music, tarot reading, palm reading, henna tattooing, food, dancing, performances by Mosaic and fabulous new-to-you items for unbelievable prices!  AND every penny you spend will go towards SEEDs!  SEEDs is also running a MEMBERSHIP DRIVE! Please become a member
TODAY! Membership is $50 for an individual and $75 for a couple.  This is a FUN way to help SEEDs because we are going to throw our members a party!  On Friday, July 24
at 7pm the party begins at SKOTIA, a beautiful new gallery on Marcy St.  Graciously hosted by Sofia Kanaavle, there will be food, music, dancing and all around appreciation and celebration of your generosity!  Have FUN and come and party with us at SKOTIA,

SEEDS Teacher Training with Myra Krien of Pomegranate Studios
Review
By Holly Luky

Teaching belly dance has become a truly inspirational part of my day-to-day activities in Sedona, AZ. I enjoy getting to know other women that have that inner desire to learn this beautiful art form and I know that we instantly have something strangely in common, because belly dance is not for everyone. As dancers, we discover a lot about ourselves in class or performances, and sometimes we work through some deep core issues we didn't know were there. It is for this exact reason that I knew as a dancer/teacher it was time to take my teaching to the next level and give something even more back to the community.

When I first heard about Myra Krien and her new program through Pomegranate Studios, I immediately resonated with it. S.E.E.D.S stands for self-esteem, empowerment and education through dance and the core principles of the program are for each girl to:
ˇ To find her own voice and be able to listen to it.
ˇ To have better self-esteem and confidence.
ˇ To be able to plan and achieve goals, generate choices, create options,
resources and support.
ˇ To be ready to face financial independence.
ˇ To have respect, appreciation and be able to care for her own body.
ˇ To respect, appreciate and be able to care for others in community.
ˇ To respect and appreciate diversity and culture.

By incorporating American Tribal Style format into the program the girls are encouraged to work together as a group with a dance style that celebrates all the natural shapes and sizes of the female body. The mentoring aspects of the program include talking circles, journaling and guest speakers who have successful careers in areas that interest the girls in the program. The more I learned about S.E.E.D.S, the more I wished I had attended this type of program when I was younger.... And I got inspired.

This June I attended Myra Krien's second annual Teacher-Training program in Santa Fe, NM and it was six fun-filled days of learning, growing, dancing and bonding with other women who share that desire.
Our group was made up of six women of all ages and a few who had previously attended the S.E.E.D.S program themselves. We learned a lot about each other as we discussed topics that we'd bring up in a talking circle, such as what makes a good role model and what does it mean to be financially independent, as well as delving into what drives us to become teachers of this program? Those six days proved to be more soul searching for myself than if I were to be on a silent retreat. I took our training manual home at night and sat with some tea, thinking about all the girls that would come into this program.  They are at such a crucial time in their lives and I remembered exactly what it felt like to be a teenager in High School again. I thought about myself, and how I would have benefited from thinking about my financial independence more at that time instead of what the gossip of the day was, or climbing the "social ladder." The teenage years come with a lot of pressure and insecurity, but it can also be a beautiful time of coming into one's own... finding their inner voice and power. Its programs like S.E.E.D.S that will provide them with a healthy outlet to move through this growth in and allow them to express themselves through dance, which can be extremely healing.

The teacher-training program wasn't all work though, we had a lot of fun together aside from learning. Myra and her lovely Mosaic Dance Company performed one evening at a local restaurant and we enjoyed a fabulous meal as we watched, which was the perfect way to start the program. On the fourth night we met for a BBQ at Myra's home and continued our in-depth discussions over homemade food, a beautiful sunset and great company. We also took time each day to simply dance... where our minds could take a little break and our bodies could just move. We danced through ATS beginning and intermediate formats with a touch of improvisation together at the end. As we danced throughout the week we got more familiar with both ourselves and with each other, and as we danced into our final improvisational formation I saw each of us come together in perfect time with the music and smiles on our faces. I imagine that is what happens to the girls that attend the S.E.E.D.S program.... They arrive uncertain about what they will be experiencing, have an amazing time learning about themselves, and at the end they have the tools to improvise their own dance- the dance of life.

Thank you Myra for being the creative genius behind this program and sharing it with us. I will let everyone know how my first program goes, I'm already getting it started!
