Greetings!
As ELP Alumni, you are part of and have access to an exciting network of professionals representing all areas of business in Greater Boston. A new ELP Communications Committee has been working to launch a communications initiative which will serve to enhance our exposure to the media and the community at large.
In our campaign, we'd like to feature the achievements of our alumni via the ELP website, social media, and news releases.
To make it easy for you to keep ELP up to date, we have created a brief questionnaire. The format is similar to the First Person feature in the Sunday Globe magazine. Don't be too modest; think of it as a marketing campaign for you!
Please click here and take a few moments to answer the questions and then we'll follow up with you before sharing your news. For a sample, please read Andrea Zuniga's Profile in Leadership.
Thank you for helping alumni stay connected and informed.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Schultz Eggert '09 Communications Chair ELP Alumni Board

2012 Cohort Status Update
We have scheduled a selection committee meeting for September 19 to determine the January cohort and begin seeding the September cohort. We aim to have 40 - 45 fellows in each cohort maximize the experience for the fellows. In order to expedite any final candidates you would like considered for 2012 / 2013 cohorts, we have opened the application process until September 16. Please encourage your colleagues to apply on-line by September 16. As alums of the program, no one is better positioned to understand the value of the program for those who participate. Please encourage those talented individuals you know to invest in their future by applying now.
To date we have several new organizations that have applied, including: Burton's Grill, Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, Medtronic, Medway Community Farm, Career Coaching 4 Kidz, State Garden, and Vinfen Corporation. Additionally, 67% of the applicants are female and 33% male, and 66% are from for-profit organizations, 17% from government, and 17% from non-profit.
Finally, if you are interested in helping out with our recruitment efforts, please consider signing up for a Alumni Board Recruitment Committee chaired by Lauren Jones, Office of Liutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray. Please email leaders@umb.edu if you would like to serve.
Pay it Forward Campaign
Look at the donor list to the right! Very impressive. We have reached 15% participation out of 100%, and have raised $5,430 (about 22% there towards reaching our $25,000 goal). If you haven't donated yet, please help us reach our goal. Donations can be made on-line by clicking here, or you can send a check to the Center for Collaborative Leadership (made payable to the Center for Collaborative Leadership), UMass Boston, 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125.
Silent Auction
The silent auction will be extremely silent without the help of our alums. Please consider making a donation to help raise money for non-profit scholarships. Stephen Roger, alumni board fundraising chair, cannot do this alone. Some ideas to get you started might include a gift basket, tickets to an event, access to private golf/sports, etc. Get creative and ask around your company for other ideas. Email Stephen at sroger@fmh.com.
10 Year Directory
You all should have received an email from Glendalys Cabrera (elpevents@umb.edu) requesting that you send updates to her by September 8th. If you haven't already done so, please do send your updates. We plan on having the 10 Year Directory available at the Gala.
Looking for a few good coaches!
Have you been looking for a concrete way to get involved with ELP? Would you like an opportunity to coach a team of emerging leaders?
This year one of the Emerging Leaders project teams focused on "The Power of the Project" and have been able to offer the Center several recommendations to strengthen this component of the program. One of the recommendations is that we provide a "go to" person to each project team.
Project team coaches will gain experience coaching and mentoring a virtual team. Coaches will act as a resource for teams as they: learn what it means to work in leaderless teams, work to define scope and negotiate expectations with the project sponsor.
The time commitment will include: a half-day training in November, the full day Project Team forum day (on January 25, 2012 for the 2012 cohort), a monthly coaches call with Maureen Scully, and approximately 4 hours a month supporting the team.
We are looking to train 15 coaches to support the 2012 and 2013 cohorts. If you are interested in volunteering to coach a project team, please e-mail
Maureen.Scully@umb.edu by September 30. |

Board Service: Extending leadership beyond your organization
September 22 from 8:30 am to 11 am
The Non-profit Center | 89 South Street | Boston
According to a survey of Emerging Leaders Program alums, we learned that almost all of our emerging leaders believe that community service is necessary to be a true leader. There are a number of ways to demonstrate civic leadership, and serving on a non-profit or charitable board is one of the ways which benefits the leaders as well as their communities.
Serving on boards provides a meaningful way to help the community. It also enhances one's skills in areas such as strategic planning, budget and finance, teamwork and collaboration. It also increases your visibility and can greatly increase your professional network. Service on a non-profit board can also lead to being selected for a corporate board.
Join us on September 22 for a half day professional development program that will teach you what you need to know about serving on a board. We will have opening remarks from Dr. Sherry Penney, who serves on a number of boards, followed by a presentation from Alison Godburn of the Arts & Business Council.
The next half of the program will be a panel presentation followed by networking, and the opportunity to learn more about joining a board from the following organizations: Arts & Business Council, United Way Board Bank, and Third Sector New England. Breakfast will be served. $25 fee to attend. Click here to register.
Making a Difference on Pressing Economic and Social Issues: Emerging Leaders Leverage Their Professional Skills, Technology, and Social Capital
October 4 from 8:30 am to 11 am
Hosted by State Street Corporation

Creating a stable and healthy economy is vital for the people who live in the Boston region, the organizations that employ them, and the investors who look to our region for innovation. Current social and economic challenges include ensuring affordable and equitably accessible housing for the people who do the essential work of the local economy, supporting low wage workers so that their work sustains both their families and their organizations in a steady and ongoing way, and providing healthy activity for children to curb the obesity epidemic.
The 2011 cohort of Emerging Leaders engaged these issues, starting with a collaborative process of learning about the issues from community stakeholders and non-profit leaders, and then crafting projects that made a difference in important and concrete ways. Through their team projects, the Emerging Leaders used their professional skills, savvy about social media, and wide-reaching networks to bring resources to community efforts. They also furthered their own skills, for stepping into broader leadership positions in the Boston region and becoming stewards of its future economic health.
Come hear about this year's team projects on October 4, 2011, to discover the lessons learned, the continuity of contributions across Emerging Leaders cohorts from the past and onward to the future, and the ways you can join others mobilizing to make a difference. Register Now.

Profile in Leadership: Andrea Zuniga '07 | In our first Profile in Leadership series, meet Andrea Zuniga, associate director of communications at Facing History and Ourselves, and the vice chair of our alumni board. She was recently interviewed by Carolyn Schultz Eggert, communications chair, Emerging Leaders Program Alumni Board. Carolyn is a member of the ELP, class of 2009, and is the director of marketing and communications for the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund.
Carolyn Eggert: How did you hear about ELP?
Andrea Zuniga: One of my co-workers at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council had participated in ELP before, and I heard about the great experience she had. I knew that I wanted to take my leadership skills to the next level.
Carolyn Eggert: Where did you work and what was your position when you started the program?
Andrea Zuniga: I worked as the communications manager for the Metropolitan Area Planning Council for five years. One of our major projects was a civic engagement initiative, MetroFuture, to plan for Greater Boston's growth and development. I needed to exercise collaborative leadership skills for that work and was grateful that ELP assigned a vocabulary for what we were trying to achieve.
