Dear Fellows,
We are pleased to announce that Lisa DeAngelis has been selected as the new Director for the Center for Collaborative Leadership. For the past four months, Lisa has served as Interim Director while we conducted the search for the permanent Director. We had a strong pool of 55 people apply for the Directorship.
Lisa is an alumnus of the program (2003) with substantial corporate experience and demonstrated her many strengths over the last several months. She has led ELP skill sessions, started to recruit new companies to apply to the ELP, and developed a fund raising strategy. We look forward to working with her, building on her knowledge of the program and her vision on how to strengthen the ELP and alumni activities in the future.
During this 10th Anniversary Year, we look forward to her leadership as we prepare for the future.
Join us in welcoming Lisa DeAngelis to our team!
Sincerely,
Sherry, Andrea and Glendalys

| Erika Beer's Adventures with Oprah | |
I was at an indoor play space with my two small children on a Tuesday morning in August of 2010 when I got a phone call from the Oprah Winfrey show. A few days earlier, I had written in to the show answering the question they had posted on the Oprah website asking people if they were "an ultimate viewer." I've been watching the show religiously for 20 plus years and since I was a teenager I have rarely missed an episode. I never expected much to come of what I had written, I just wanted to say thank you to Oprah for all these years of providing me with such moving and inspiring television. Her show has impacted me like no other. So, I was floored when a producer at the Oprah show called. I answered several of her questions and then never heard from her again. Two weeks later I received an email inviting me and a guest to come to Chicago for a taping of the Oprah show. I was beyond excited and in less than two weeks, my long time friend Amy and I were on a plane to Chicago, leaving our young families behind. I was so excited to see the show, because I knew there was a potential for a big surprise, this being Oprah's last season. When the curtain opened and Oprah walked out with John Travolta and told us this was the season premiere of her very last season, we were blown away. Then she told us she was taking all of us "Ultimate Viewers" with her to Australia and we nearly lost our minds with excitement and joy!
Two months later all 302 of us were on a plane for a 12 day adventure-Oprah Winfrey style- to Australia. We touched down in Sydney to a hero's welcome. Turns out the whole country was expecting us! We were embraced everywhere we went with a red carpet welcome. The trip was a huge departure from our daily lives and the itinerary was non stop with surprises and adventures. One surprise was a flight from Sydney to beautiful Hamilton Island, the gateway island to the Great Barrier Reef, where 100 of us stayed in an impressive hotel overlooking the bay for 3 nights. From there we took a boat to Whitehaven Beach, one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world, where we partied with a spread put on by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and where Oprah arrived by helicopter to greet us. We snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, sailed in a regatta of 20 plus sailboats with Oprah and Russell Crowe, and climbed the Sydney Harbor Bridge with Oprah and the entire audience setting a world's record for the largest group to ever climb the bridge at one time. One of the highlights of the trip was going to see U2 and Jay Z with thousands of Australians at Sydney's Olympic Stadium. The last day of the trip all 302 of us got prime seats at two Oprah show tapings at the Sydney Opera House. All 6,000 audience members received diamonds and pearls.
I look back on the trip sometimes and pinch myself. I would have to say that as exciting as it was the best part for me was that the very last moment before I boarded the plane I got a chance to look Oprah in the eye, give her a hug and say "Thank you." That was a moment I will never forget.
Erika Beer is an alum of the 2007 cohort. She is the Alumni Volunteer Program Manager at State Street Corporation. |
| Red Sox Event to Benefit Dorchester Academy a Huge Success | |
The 2011 cohort collaborated to put together a charitable event to benefit Dorchester Academy, a UMass neighbor and the school where fellow ELP'er Jill Blouin teaches. More than 85 tickets were sold and proceeds were given to the Dorchester Academy for equipment updates and infrastructure renovations.
Plans are underway for a similar fund raiser event in the Summer to benefit the Latino STEM Alliance. LSA is a startup 501c3 initially working to develop afterschool and summer programs targeted at underprivileged youth at the K-16 levels, including parental engagement and cultural-alignment, focused around Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). LSA was co-founded by Raul Porras (2011) of EMC Corporation.
