ELP Happenings

On-line donations to the Center

On December 22, 2010, we sent out an electronic holiday card asking for your help with ELP scholarship donations. We want to double check with you in order to ensure the new system is working properly. If you did submit a donation on-line as a response to our holiday card and did not receive a thank you note from the Center for Collaborative Leadership, please let us know. Our two main concerns are that the routing system did not work, and that you were not appropriately thanked for your gift. Please follow up with Andrea Wight at leaders@umb.edu to check your donation status.

Alumni Board Elections

The ELP Alumni Board is in the process of its annual turnover. Jodi Wolin, Boston Children's Chorus ('06) has successfully chaired the board for the past year. Under her guidance, we have formed 3 working committees: Gala Fundraising; Gala Marketing & PR; and Alumni Board By-laws. We will continue the momentum under the direction of our soon to be chair, Joe Bator of Eastern Bank ('08). Andrea Zuniga, Facing History and Ourselves ('07) will be taking over as vice chair.

Consider taking on a leadership role within the ELP Alumni Network. Please click this link to find the various roles and responsibilities of Alumni Board members.  Now through March 18, we will be accepting nominations for the 2011-2012 Alumni Board.  You can nominate yourself or fellow alum.  If multiple candidates are interested in the same position, we will conduct voting through an on-line process.  Email Andrea Wight at leaders@umb.edu to nominate.

10 Year ELP Directory

We are planning on publishing a 10 year directory of ELP Fellows. Kindly send your bio revisions to elpevents@umb.edu. We are getting started on this process early, and we will follow up with individuals via email if necessary in order to meet deadlines. Go to our ELP directory page and use the pull down menu to see the bios we have on file.

Requests for Assistance

The ELP team that plays together, stays together...

Have you heard of the ELP group, South Shore Men's Club? They are a group of fellows from the South Shore who meet regularly to have dinner, keep in touch, and provide each other with career advice. Are you in a similar ELP group? Perhaps you were in a team that bonded, and you get together every so often to re-connect. Or maybe you have a critical mass of ELP alums within your organization, and you've created a group. If so, please let us know about it. We are gathering information to highlight for the ELP's 10th Anniversary. To share your story, email Andrea at leaders@umb.edu by March 31.

Need help with a work project? UMass Boston students can help!

Does your organization have an initiative that's been lying fallow?  Do you have a project or an event that could take off if it were handed over to a smart and motivated team of UMass Boston students?  Right now, 50+ undergrads in the Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation course (taught by Prof. Benyamin Lichtenstein) are looking for semester-long team projects (2-4 students in a team) in which they can apply their skills in entrepreneurial organizing to make a real contribution to a local enterprise like yours.

Your project would be somewhat limited in scope and have relatively low risk, but your expectations should be extremely high: These are bright, motivated students with a real commitment to make something happen in an organization. You would provide some clear goals and outcomes, and give them latitude to figure out how they would pursue the endeavor and make their entrepreneurial contribution.

If you're interested, please contact Prof. Benyamin via phone (617-787-7887) or e-mail benyamin.bml@gmail.com, and we'll talk about the prospects.  Whether or not you have a good project at the moment, feel free to connect: Our long-term aim is to enhance the connection between the College of Management and the Emerging Leaders program.  Thank you for your efforts!

"e" inc Fundraiser Request from Annis Gill-Miller 2002

Happy New Year Cohorts! As a 2002 Cohort I'm amazed and inspired how our group continues to grow and I'm so honored to be working on the committee to celebrate our 10th anniversary... Wow! how time flies! Speaking of how time flies, I'm reaching out again as I did last year for your support for "e" inc, a non-profit grass roots organization focused on environmental education and activism where I serve as a volunteer and Board Chair. Let me refresh your memory.  "e" inc. is an environmental learning and action center which educates school age children about respect for our planet. We are active in a dozen or more schools around Greater Boston and we're having an impact, on the over 500 children we see, one child at a time!

Our signature fundraiser is the nationally acclaimed Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival focusing on various important aspects of the environment including water resource, rain forest, climate and pollution. You will be amazed, troubled and inspired by what you learn from these films. It will be a two-day event this year on March 25th and March 26th including thought provoking films and a panel discussion moderated by Robin Young, radio host of WBUR. So please take a few moments to review an informative letter from the Executive Director, Dr. Ricky Stern, detailing the fundraiser as well as our sponsorship information page and I'll be in contact with you over the next two weeks to discuss further. In the interim, please visit the "e" inc. website at  www.e-action.us and I will look forward to our next interaction. Take care and be well!

Sports Celebrity Speakers, anyone?

The Anthem Group, a multifaceted event and experiential marketing agency, has expanded its services to offer leadership, motivational and team building speakers from the professional sports industry. The Anthem roster includes both current and retired athletes from all four major sports and the Olympics. Additionally, marquee coaches, agents and media personalities are available. Recent Boston area engagements have included N.E. Patriot Wes Welker, ESPN/NESN broadcaster Peter Gammons, Sports Illustrated journalist Peter King, and Boston Bruin Shawn Thorton. Individuals from all Boston teams are currently available.

Adding a celebrity speaker or appearance is the ideal way to capture your audience. The most common topics are leadership development, managing change, overcoming adversity, team building and diversity. Professional sports provide a unique platform that demonstrates the same skill set necessary in the business world. Whether you have a training, sales conference, fundraiser, employee appreciation outing or other event for clients or your own team - adding the right personality makes a lasting impression and resonates your message.

Contact ELP 2011 Fellow, Chris Sinclair at 617.308.8459 or via email at csinclair@anthemevents.com for more information or with questions.

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
