Emerging Leaders Program Updates
The ELP Exchange
Issue: 24
August  2010
Dear Alumni & Fellows,

The applicant pool for the 2011 cohort is impressive. Several potential fellows from the non-profit sector have requested scholarship assistance:

As a non-profit organization reeling from the effects of the recession, we have been forced to reduce our operating budget.... Because of this we do not have budgeted dollars for staff leadership development or training. The [organization] would not be able to provide [our candidate] with any funds towards this program. In order to participate she would need scholarship support... I know that she would be a great candidate for this program. She is very focused and invested in her career and I would not be surprised if she were to become a leader in the public sector.

Our arts sector is in desperate need of innovative, collaborative young leaders. With... engagement in programs like Emerging Leaders, I have no doubt that [our candidate] will have an enormous impact on our community.  [Our organization] is deeply committed to the professional development of our staff members and enthusiastic about providing them with the time that they need to participate in training programs. Unfortunately our tight operating budget simply doesn't allow us to absorb the fee...

...I've become very excited about participating in the Emerging Leaders Program.  While the [organization] has been supportive of my potential participation in the program ...they have, with regret, made it clear that there is no money to assist with the program fee...  I would very much value the opportunity to be the first participant from the [organization] to take part in the Emerging Leaders Program.

Please consider making a donation to the Emerging Leaders Program Scholarship fund. Donations of $50.00 or more will receive an Emerging Leaders Program stainless steel water container. See the Center's donation website for more information.

Sincerely,

Jodi Wolin, Joe Bator & Steve Roger

Summer party 2010
We'd like to extend our thanks to Deanna and George for hosting our ELP Summer Party on July 10th. They know how to entertain. Once again, I wish I took more pictures... click on the photo to the left to see the few that I took. It was humid, so I tended to stay in the pool.

Tenure!
Congratulations to Professor Maureen Scully who received her Tenure in the College of Management at UMass Boston. While on her tenure track here, we hired Maureen in 2008 as our team project consultant and facilitator. I think the 2008 through 2010 fellows will agree we hit a home run with her.

Board Opportunity

The Massachusetts Sibling Support Network (MSSN) is excited to announce openings on our newly formed Board of Directors. We are currently seeking individuals with expertise in marketing/communications, fundraising/development, psychiatry/medicine, and sibling services.

According to the Disability Policy Consortium, people with disabilities constitute 20% of the population in Massachusetts; many have siblings in need of support. The MSSN is committed to educating these siblings about their roles in the family and as caregivers, creating welcoming communities for siblings that support them throughout the lifespan, and improving access to - as well as expanding the range of - sibling services. The MSSN includes adult siblings, parents of young siblings, mental health professionals and sibling service providers, along with others who are interested in sibling issues within Massachusetts.

We are looking to create a participative, diverse and dedicated Board of Directors at the MSSN. Individuals who feel compelled by our mission to support siblings, who bring a unique skill set, and have the time and energy to help us establish and achieve our goals are especially welcome! Board members will serve a two-year term and may be re-elected. Board meetings will be held quarterly, with a minimum attendance at our annual meeting.

The application process is simple. Prospective board members should submit a personal statement and CV/resume to Emily Rubin (emily.rubin@masiblingsupport.org) by September 15, 2010. If you are interested in learning more about MSSN Board membership, please contact her.

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
