Presenters
"I thought the entire event was very well run and organized. I found the speakers and discussion very inspirational, which will help me reflect on my own career and enhance my professional development." We received this feedback from Alexis Gardner from Raytheon who, with nearly 40 others, participated in Managing Your Career on February 25. The morning event began with a panel of ELP alums: Lisa DeAngelis ('03), Paul Francisco ('05), Miriam Katz ('06), and moderator, Linda Rossetti ('02).

Linda directed the panel discussion around "Setting Career Objectives & Leveraging 'Lessons Learned' from your own Career." The panel was followed by breakout sessions in which attendees chose what aspect of their own career development they wanted to focus on.

In her session, Linda shared the current state of hiring within Fortune 500 organizations using Iron Mountain as a case study and led a discussion on how best to network in those environments. Lisa DeAngelis and her husband Anthony, co-founders of Leading with Values looked at the impact of the last 18 months on employees and companies from both the individual and leadership perspective. Paul Francisco, founder and managing director of Foster & Francisco, focused on directing participants to manage their career and their recruitment brand by effectively leveraging Social Media. Miriam Katz is the founder and owner of True Calling: career and life coaching. In her session, Miriam used the "career bullseye" to help participants undergo a process of self-discovery through which they clarify what motivates them in the workplace.

This event was sponsored by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority and planned by members of the ELP Alumni Board: Andrea Zuniga, programming chair; Stephen Finocchio, chair; and Jodi Wolin, vice chair.

2002
Ken Weber spoke at the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) Winter Dinner Meeting on March 11. The program title was: "What are the labor implications of the reorganization of the MA Department of Transportation?"  As the Chief Administrative Officer of the MA Department of Transportation, Ken addressed many of the on-going labor issues and challenges that have emerged during this organization's large scale, legislatively mandated merger.

Mariama White-Hammond is featured in "An eye-opening ride into the city within the city: Civic leaders tour some of Hub's bleakest streets" by Boston Globe Reporter, Joseph P. Kahn. "In the 1990s, White-Hammond said, a crackdown on high-profile street criminals created a power vacuum that broke down the code of street conduct set by the gangs. Meanwhile, tough economic times have been making it hard for ex-offenders to resume productive lives. "During the Big Dig, there were lots of jobs,'' she said. "Not now. You can get CORI-ed for any kind of work,'' a reference to Criminal Offender Record Information background check."

2004
Anna Giraldo-Kerr is featured in Color Magazine's March 2010 newsletter. She wrote an Article entitled "Empowerment 101" in which she analyzes the word empowerment. She concludes the article with this thought: "That may be the greatest revelation about attempting to define empowerment: We are always looking to be empowered by others. And we often forget that we have the ability to empower others and, most importantly, to empower ourselves."

2006
Diane Darling is featured in the March 2, 2010 Wall Street Journal article "A Networking Pro Learns Some New Tricks" by Joann S. Lublin. "Dinosaurs do dance," insists Mr. Langis, a 63-year-old resident of Henderson, Nev., with broad shoulders and smiles. "I lead change in companies. I can certainly change." He acquired his fresh dance steps from Alicia Whitaker, a New York executive coach; Stephanie Daniel, an outplacement counselor for a unit of Keystone Partners, a Boston human-resources consultancy; and Diane Darling, founder of Effective Networking Inc. in Boston.

The Boston Children's Chorus announced Jodi Wolin has joined its senior management team as Director of Development. In her new role, Wolin will be charged with providing strategic direction and management of BCC's fundraising and marketing efforts, cultivating partnerships and resources to support the programs of Boston's only children's educational organization dedicated to creating social change through music. Wolin was previously the Chief Development Officer for the Children's Trust Fund for seven years, where she oversaw all private fundraising for the commonwealth's largest organization dedicated solely to the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

2007
Jason Schupbach is featured in the February 26, 2010 Boston Business Journal article "Geeks and gamers to descend on Hub" by Rodney Brown. Jason Schupbach, creative economy industry director for the state of Massachusetts, has been helping Khoo and the PAX staff since he first starting working for the state in early 2009. While his department has helped Khoo once they made the decision to come to Boston, the credit for that decision lays in the hands of the local gaming community itself, he said. "They made the decision based on going to a lot of community events," Schupbach said. "They were just blown away by the communications and the community here."

Volunteers needed for a UMass Boston Student-run Initiative "BLAST"
BLAST (Beacon Leadership and Resource Team) was organized to bring quality leadership-based programming and resources to our students to benefit them as individuals as well as benefit the communities that they serve. This semester they are planning some events geared toward student leadership development in areas of personal, professional, and academic development. They are looking for volunteers to conduct a public speaking workshop for students, to help them develop confidence and skill in effective oral presentation. They are looking to do a series of 3 days (one day per week) so that students may have time to reflect and apply the information. They would like to make this interactive so that students may present in the workshops and get constructive feedback. Students have expressed interest in this area of development, and BLAST would love to bring this resource to them. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Taja Ricketts at [email protected] or (617) 459-0588

The Vault
On February 28, 2010 The Boston Globe announced the new vault. Globe reporter, Steven Syre writes, "A group of chief executives from some of the biggest companies in Massachusetts has been meeting privately with state political leaders on ways to spur job development, a coordinated high-level business effort reminiscent of Boston's Vault organization that weighed in on public affairs decades ago."

Sounds good, but as Marjorie Arons-Barron writes in her
blog: "Does Massachusetts really need a tiny self-selected, elitist group of powerful people who want to do things the old way, by excluding other voices and not using the ideas and energies of a whole new generation of people highly invested in the future of Massachusetts and already making a difference."...  "Not quite ready, but waiting in the wings, is a whole new generation of talented leaders who actually reflect the new demographics of the state, identified and developed by groups like the Emerging Leaders Program at UMass Boston and The Partnership. Their creation was motivated by lack of power sharing by the old Vault."

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
