The ELP Exchange
Issue: 19
October / November  2009
Dear Fellows,

The June / July issue number 17 of the ELP Exchange featured a plea for scholarship donations to the Emerging Leaders Program to help defray the program fee for applicants in the non-profit sector. To date, we have raised $2,635, and have a pledge for $3,000.

Our goal is to raise $30,000. So far we have $5635, about 19 percent. Our goal is to have 100 percent alumni participation in our fund raising efforts this year. So far we have donations from 24 fellows, about 7 percent.

  • The 2002 cohort has a donation participation rate of 3.1%
  • The 2003 cohort has a donation participation rate of 7.7%
  • The 2004 cohort has a donation participation rate of 8.5%
  • The 2005 cohort has a donation participation rate of 7.1%
  • The 2006 cohort has a donation participation rate of 5.1%
  • The 2007 cohort has a donation participation rate of 11.1%
  • The 2008 cohort has a donation participation rate of 7.8%
  • The 2009 cohort has a donation participation rate of 4.3%

With what we have raised so far, and due to a generous donation from the Trefler Foundation, we have accepted fellows from The Children's Trust Fund, Kaya Children, AIDS Action Committee, Citizen's Schools, the Boston Public Library and 2 Boston Public School Teachers.

The support of the alumni is the strength of the ELP. We need you!

  • It is our hope with this push to have enough to continue to support the non-profit applicants into 2011. To donate, go to the ELP website and submit your pledge. A pledge letter with a postage paid envelope will be mailed to you. Donations of $50.00 or more will receive Voices of the Future: Emerging Leaders. We thank you in advance for your support.

    Sincerely,

    ELP Happenings

Jeff Taylor has them up and dancing at the Emerging Leaders October 7 luncheon

2007 cohort listening to team presentations"If you're going to show up, you might as well run the meeting."

"If you're nervous, you're in the process of learning something."

These were just two of the pieces of advice from Jeff Taylor, the Bay State entrepreneur (and UMass graduate) who founded the billion dollar job search website Monster.com. He left Monster in 2005 to start a new project called Eons, a web site designed to cater to the millions of Americans aged 55 or older, and, in 2008, he started Tributes.com, a site for obituaries resources.

"We're here to think about possibilities," he said. "You have two choices: be insane or be an entrepreneur. When everyone thinks you're crazy and you still think you have a good idea, you're an entrepreneur," he added.  "Nervous excitement, getting the endorphins going, makes the ideas bigger." Taylor advised the Emerging Leaders on how to get traction for their ideas, using musicians as an example. Musicians are entrepreneurs, starting small, building momentum, adding more and more elements, he said, and, by the end of his talk, he had the entire audience on its feet, clapping rhythmically, waving arms, and, yes, dancing. His own career, he explained, has "gone in and around, up and down, not in a straight line.  It doesn't matter how you do it; you just have to do it." Perspective is important.  "The internet has been around for 5000 days. We have changed the world. What will happen in the next 5000 days?," he asked.  You have to keep your eye on the big picture - in Boston and in each of our lives.

    Next Generation Leadership
On August 19th we submitted the manuscript for our second leadership book: Next Generation Leadership: Insights from Emerging Leaders to Palgrave. We expect the book to be published summer 2010.

    Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork. Community Counts

Little changes make a big difference. That is one of the underlying premises driving the service-oriented ELP fellows taking big strides toward making the Greater Boston community better. Are you doing great things in the community? Send an email to your class representative listed below.
