Emerging Leaders Program News and Information

The ELP Exchange
Issue: 18
August 2009
Dear Fellows,

The Emerging Leaders Program is at a critical juncture. The number of applicants we typically receive has dropped dramatically. We believe that this decline is due to the economy.  This is especially true of the nonprofit and governmental sector applicants.  As you are aware, the program is facing a deficit in scholarship funds. Thanks to some of you, we have raised just over $1,000, and we have a pledge for $3,000, but it is not enough.

We are therefore requesting help - for those of you whose companies are financially stable, we ask that you nominate someone for the 2010 cohort (ASAP) and become an ELP Luncheon Sponsor.

Reach out to your networks and advocate for the ELP. We are always attempting to grow the network of organizations - TJX, CVS, BJ's, Red Sox - if you have an "in" help us recruit.

We also ask those of you who are personally financially able to continue to send scholarship donations. Donors who send $50.00 or more will receive a copy of Voices of the Future: Emerging Leaders.

Both the luncheon sponsorship and the scholarship donations are tax deductable. For those of you whose companies offer matching donations, you can contact Maureen Lynch, University a Massachusetts Boston Advancement Office, to receive assistance in matching donations.

On a positive front, we have 30 outstanding applicants. We are happy to welcome new companies to the ELP including: Intel, SBLI, and Silver Bridge Advisors. We hope to be able to weather the storm, and, with your help, grow the 2010 cohort to at least 45 fellows in order to sustain the program.

Sincerely,

Sherry, Pat, Andrea & Glendalys

David Howse: Trip to Jordan

BBC in JordanThe Boston Children's Chorus traveled to Jordan this summer on a two-week cultural exchange tour which proved to be a life altering experience both individually and collectively. Not only did the singers perform well and under many different circumstances, but they played a key role in cultural diplomacy as acknowledged by F. Stephen Beecroft, US Ambassador to Jordan:

"I am delighted the Boston Children's Chorus (BCC) was able to help the American embassy celebrate 60 years of diplomatic and cultural ties between the United States and Jordan.  Ambassadors use the language of trade and politics, but musicians speak to the spirit. And that's just what the BCC did here in Jordan, bringing its special aura of talent and dedication to boisterous young audiences from all around the country.  Bravo!

There were numerous revelatory and poignant moments. Some of these resulted from singers' interactions with Middle Eastern youth and performances in different areas of Jordan, and others were simply from being a group of young Americans learning about and being in the Middle East for the first time.

Following one of our exchanges with Jordanian youth, one of our female singers, who is Jewish, had a very emotional reaction. She had been brought up to distrust and fear Palestinians. However, upon meeting some Palestinians her age, she recognized a greater commonality than ever had been depicted or realized in her life thus far. Others in our group - even those of other faiths - had very similar reactions. Overall, our singers adopted a very positive outlook on the Middle East, and many have expressed a desire to return to Jordan. In fact, many of them are still talking on Facebook about how much they miss being there!

All in all, this was a truly unforgettable experience for everyone that participated in this tour. We now look forward to raising funds to complete a 20-30 minute documentary film that we plan to premier this fall.

The Boston Children's Chorus (BCC) is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic arts education organization that purposefully unites area children ages 7-18 across differences of race, religion and socio-economic status to discover the power of singing and to serve as ambassadors for their city through local performances as well as on tour nationally and internationally. The BCC's mission is to harness the power and joy of music as a catalyst to unite our city's diverse communities and inspire social change.

The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine reported a story, Young, Black and Running. The story features ELP Alum Chip Greenidge of the National Black College Alliance, and also mentions ELP Alum Robert Fortes, and ELP nominee for the 2010 cohort, Tito Jackson in their bids for City Council.

Excerpt: The young's criticism of their political elders extends beyond age. Politically active members of Generation X suggest the current officeholders are too given to confrontation, particularly along racial lines. "I think we're faster to collaborate and reach consensus," says George "Chip" Greenidge, 35, executive director of the National Black College Alliance, which takes high school students on tours of historically black colleges, helps them apply to institutions of higher learning, and during the past year has sponsored intergenerational dialogues. A master networker, Greenidge has more than 3,000 friends on Facebook.

For the first time, black candidates for at-large council seats are stacked up, though it remains to be seen how many make it past the September 22 preliminary, which will winnow the field to eight for the November 3 election. If elected, Pressley would be the first African-American woman on the council. Ezedi would be the first with African immigrant roots (his father is Nigerian). The other African-Americans in the citywide race are Scotland Willis, Robert Fortes and Tito Jackson, all Generation Xers. Jean-Claude Sanon, a boomer, would be the first of Haitian descent. John Heffernan is quoted in the Boston Business Journal, A bitter pill: Massachusetts' stringent health care gift ban is putting a major crimp in doctor's ability to network, by Mary K. Pratt, page 28, August 14-20, 2009. "It limits what they can do as far as when they can meet, where they can meet," said John Heffernan, vice president of policy and external affairs at the nonprofit Massachusetts Biotechnology Council. "It's definitely going to affect how companies market their products, and they might even cut back on their work force - which means jobs in this state."

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
