It is our belief that the voices of these emerging leaders offer valuable insights to those of us who work in leadership and to organizations that strive to promote leaders... Their personal stories are powerful and the insights they offer will help us all face the future with confidence. - Sherry Penney

In 1998, I recall sitting on the cold steps of La Paz, Bolivia, at 1 am, despondent about the well-being of our children in Bolivia and the other 200 million street children in the world. Ironically, it was a fourteen-year-old street girl who gave me counsel and encouragement. At the end of our talk, I told her that their lives are significant and their voices will never be left unheard. After much personal introspection and a sincere desire to advocate for our children and not myself, we published When Invisible Children Sing in 2006. This commitment has informed my views on healthcare and my own career. ~Dr. Chi-Cheng Huang

As a first-generation, dual-citizen African-American, born to naturalized U.S. citizens in Boston (mother born in Panama, Canal Zone, and father born in Barbados, West Indies), I was raised with a rich cross-cultural appreciation and the belief that I can do anything that I make up my mind to do. To my parents, hard work and a good education were the keys to success in America. To them, knowledge was something that "no one can take away." When they reflected on my future as a child of the 1970s, surrounded by the turmoil of busing and racial divides in the city of Boston, they often said: "Whatever you decide to do or be, 'Do and Be the Best.'" ~Sandra Best Bailly

Our authors are: Sandra Bailly, Ron Bell, David Dance, Lisa De Angelis, Hugh Drummond, Paul Francisco, Armindo Goncalves, David Halbert, Chi Huang, Andrea Hurwitz, Anne Marie Boursiquot King, Georgianna Melendez, Nate Pusey, Michael Rawan, Pauliina Swartz, Mary Tolikas, Amanda Trojan, Deanna Yameen, Christie Getto Young and one who wishes to remain anonymous.

Education and advocacy with Somerville's immigrant community
The Welcome Project (TWP), based at the Mystic Public Housing Development in Somerville, was established in 1987 by community residents to support immigrant and refugee families facing discrimination along with social, cultural and linguistic barriers as they arrived in Somerville.

TWP is located in the Mystic Activity Center in the heart of the Mystic Development, the city's largest public housing complex. Our mission is to build a stronger citywide community by diminishing racism and empowering refugee and immigrant communities. We create opportunities for residents of all backgrounds to work together to improve their social, economic, and personal well-being. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact UMass Boston Professor of History, James Green at James.Green@umb.edu.

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
