ELP: Let's keep the program strong for 2010

We are seeking your help to keep the Emerging Leaders Program strong. Recruitment for the 2010 cohort is approaching.  We need assurance that the current leaders of your companies will continue to nominate emerging leaders. In early April, you will all be receiving hard copy mailing of our brochure and nomination form. Please organize within your companies to make sure that those nomination forms get to the right people.  Also let us know if more information is needed or if a personal visit to provide more information about the ELP might be helpful.  We need nominations by June 16 (if not sooner for peace of mind) so we are asking for your help now.

If you are in a position to tell us whether or not your company will be able to send a fellow, the sooner you tell us the better.

Let's keep the network strong.

Regards,

Sherry, Pat, Andrea, & Glendalys

The Recruitment Committee Co-Chair is a one-year commitment. The Chair is responsible for helping to identify prospects for future participation in the Emerging Leaders Program, as well as identifying companies and/or industries that have not yet sent individuals to the program. Sonal Gandhi '07 will be serving as chair, but we feel this year, there is an urgent need for an extra person.

Class Representatives (nominations can be accepted for the following cohorts: 2003, 2005, 2006):
The Class Representative position, a two-year commitment, is an invaluable link between the Representative's respective cohort, the Alumni Board and the ELP Leadership Team. Each Representative is responsible for attending meetings and/or conference calls throughout the year to voice their respective cohorts' concerns & issues, while providing feedback to the Alumni Board & ELP Leadership Team. Finally, on occasion the Class Representatives will be asked to assist the various Program Chairs & Alumni Board members in planning events for their class and the ELP as a whole. The Class Representative position is ideally suited for the alumnus who enjoys being in communication with his/her classmates.

Japanese American Leadership Delegation Trip to Japan
by Pat Neilson

I had the honor and privilege to be part of the 2009 Japanese American Leadership Delegation (JALD) for the past eleven days in Japan. This official trip was sponsored by the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership in collaboration with the Japanese American National Museum.

This thirteen member delegation represented ten cities from various regions of the United States and a diversity of professions including business, communications, finance government, health, higher education, law, marketing and media.

The Japanese American Leadership Delegation program promotes the value of sustained people-to-people relationships as a critical factor in assuring the long-term success of U.S.-Japan relations. We visited Kyoto, Tokyo and Okinawa where we met with Japanese leaders from the Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, the U.S. Embassy, and business. We met with Prime Minister Taro Aso, Her Highness Princess Takamadeo and Yoheir Kono,  Speaker of the House of Representatives.

While in Okinawa we met with Governor Hirokazu Nakaima and participated in a symposium titled, Building Networks: an Era of Change in Japanese American and Japan Relations. Three members of the delegation presented their personal story about growing up as Japanese Americans. I was one of the presenters and spoke about my Okinawan American experience. This was my second trip to Japan but my first visit to Okinawa. I had the opportunity to visit the birthplaces of both my maternal and paternal grandparents. As a third generation Japanese American, this was quite a moving experience. Overall, I'm thinking about possible connections with the Center for Collaborative Leadership and leaders in the Japanese community and how we can learn from each other.

Voices of the Future: Emerging Leaders Book Party
Come and celebrate the publication of the Emerging Leaders Program Anthology on July 14 5:30PM - 7:30PM!

It is our belief that the voices of these emerging leaders offer valuable insights to those of us who work in leadership and to organizations that strive to promote leaders... Their personal stories are powerful and the insights they offer will help us all face the future with confidence. - Sherry Penney

As I started to distinguish between ignorance and facts surrounding the busing conflict, I began to bond with some of the white students in my class. In fact, my ability to engage with white students and white teachers on the issue of busing marked the beginning of my leadership journey... Being able to recognize such harsh social, economic and political realities at an early age fueled my leadership drive: I spoke the truth even when it meant making people around me uneasy. - Armindo Goncalves

As a woman, an immigrant, and the first college graduate in my family, I have at times struggled to fit into a corporate work environment. I sometimes wonder whether I should openly express my feelings or sense of humor, for example. I realize not everybody in corporate America shares my background of coming from a place where wacky sports like mosquito-killing and wife-carrying are popular. - Pauliina Swartz

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
