In seven years, the Emerging Leaders Program Alumni Network has grown to 300 members strong. If you think about the individual networks that each Alumni brings, our group represents hundreds of thousands of connections across the City of Boston and beyond! To ensure a strong and growing ELP Network, an Alumni Board meets monthly to plan social, networking and other special opportunities to help keep us collaborating, informed and connected. Board meetings alternate each month between in-person meetings and conference calls. As the outgoing Board Chair, I invite all of you to consider taking on a leadership role within the ELP Alumni Network. Please see descriptions below to find the various roles and responsibilities of Alumni Board members. Now through February 19, we will be accepting nominations for the 2009 Alumni Board. I encourage you to nominate yourself or fellow alum. If multiple candidates are interested in the same position, we will conduct voting through an on-line process. In past years, we have only had one slate of candidates, so voting was not required. Either way, the election process will be communicated. If you are interested in getting involved, would like to nominate someone or would like to know more about any particular position, please let Andrea Wight in the ELP office know via email at leaders@umb.edu. The new Alumni Board will be introduced at a special event we're planning on the evening of Monday, March 30. Best, Isabel Hardy Alumni Chair, '05 Cohort |

Dr. Sherry Penney was interviewed for the program Urban Edge. Please tune in to channel 7 on Sunday, January 25 at 11:30 to see her interview discussing women and leadership with Sheriff Andrea Cabral.
What a party we had on December 15th! It was nice to see so many of you at Jurys. We had representation from all the cohorts (2002 - 2009) with over 70 attendees. It was great to see the network in action - Diane Darling, founder and CEO of Effective Networking, a frequent ELP speaker on the topic of networking, (and not to mention also a 2004 fellow) would have been proud. If you missed it, you may want to pencil in March 30th. The ELP Alumni Board is planning a networking party focused on opportunities in a down economy. Stay tuned.
A Second Chance: Due to a conflict, Mayor Menino was unable to attend the 2008 team project presentations that took place on October 15th. His office graciously invited the presenters to meet with him on December 16th to fill him in on what he missed. So, on the morning after the ELP Holiday Party, Michelle Caldeira (PSI), David Dance (BCBSMA), David Halbert (Office of Sam Yoon), Christopher Harris (The BNY Mellon), Bridget Hindle (Sovereign Bank), and Michelle Lynch (BCBSMA) along with Drs. Sherry Penney, Patricia Neilson, and Maureen Scully met with Mayor Menino to discuss the team topic of the young professional's role in philanthropy. We are grateful for the opportunity to have had a private audience with the Mayor to continue to inform him on results of ELP projects and to continue this important relationship of sharing information on social responsibility and civic engagement. The 2009 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Program will kick off on January 26th with noted speaker Marsh Carter, Chair of the NYSE. For the 2009 program we will be back to favorite locations such as MCCA in February, The Boston Globe in March, State Street in April, BCBS in May, Citizens Bank in June, and the Federal Reserve in July. ELP alum of these organizations are always invited to join us for those days for a "refresher course" and to meet the new fellows. We welcome the 47 new individuals to the program, and we offer them some advice: Get some rest! We'll be keeping you busy.
The Center for Collaborative Leadership welcomes Glendalys Cabrera as our new administrative assistant. Glendalys has five years of administrative experience, most recently from eScription, Inc. in Needham. She has also been accepted into the UMass Boston College of Management undergraduate program. We look forward to working with her.

Brief History of ELP |
|
The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
