I will make this intro segment short since there is so much information below. We have had a whirlwind fall with ELP team projects, the luncheon, a seminar on Chinese culture, language, & cuisine, and an upcoming Holiday Reception. ELP alumni are keeping busy with their events as well. Some of the announcements below are just around the corner, so please take a look at "other upcoming events" to hopefully fit some of the events below into your calendar. Happy Thanksgiving, Andrea |

We've been written up by the Boston Business Journal
On October 15, the 2008 cohort presented their findings on the role of young professionals in corporate citizenship and cross-sector collaboration asking the question- Does civic engagement retain young professionals, in our organizations and our region? The 7 team representatives presented to an audience of about 80 people including Boston Business Journal Reporter Mary Moore who wrote the following article: UMass eyes philanthropy to lure young professionals Boston Business Journal
by Mary Moore | Friday, October 24, 2008 With Boston struggling to retain young professionals, the University of Massachusetts-Boston's Emerging Leaders program found that corporate philanthropy might just be the way to keep them here. Seven teams of Emerging Leaders explored whether civic engagement could be the glue to bond peers their age to the Boston region....The Emerging Leaders project was not about young professionals gathering on Saturday mornings at a soup kitchen, albeit commendable volunteerism, but rather exploring how they can leverage their executive-level skills and apply them to the nonprofit sector. Read full article>> The teams concluded that making a meaningful contribution is a reward in itself, collaborating with other young professionals across sectors is eye-opening, and conceptualizing "leadership" broadly in terms of civic engagement makes a long-term career in the Boston region exciting and appealing. We've had 300 people over for lunch
On October 24, the Emerging Leaders Program celebrated the graduation of the 51 members of the seventh cohort and welcomed the 48 members of the eighth cohort to the program. Liz Walker gave a powerful speech that we hope inspired many to think about the Kairos moment we are in and how to use this unique moment in time to right the wrongs through civic engagement. We are now up to 295 alumni, and growing. Our many thanks to the ELP fellows who return year after year for this special event, and to the corporations who sponsored the event even through these tough financial times. We've been formulating an International Component to our Program
On November 18, the Emerging Leaders Program partnered with the UMass Boston Confucius Institute to bring you the China Seminars: Bridging the Gap. Dr. Wanli Hu of UMass Boston discussed China's historical and cultural legacy and the current economical rise of China explaining how "Rome was not build in one day, but a new Manhattan appeared in Shanghai in 15 years". Dr. Mingquan Wang of Tufts University presented on the Mandarin language, and after, Dr. Shirley Tang of UMass Boston explained the food and culture of China over a dinner reception at Chou Chow City. Here are what attendees had to say: I really enjoyed the event and I think it was very useful for me. We all need to know about other cultures but the understanding of China is key for the future of the world. I enjoyed both presentations and feel now that I have a basic but great understanding of its Culture, History, Political affairs, Languages and current achievements. The food was delicious at the dinner reception and I kept learning more about the culture with the food. Well Done! Vanesa Matamoros '07 I thought the presentations were well articulated and thought out. Diversity events such as these really help everyone understand and appreciate different cultures. From a business perspective they also help to develop effective working relationships with our diverse work force by being able to communicate about many fundamental things learned and observed. From a practical standpoint these relationships help develop and foster teams/teamwork and in some cases, eventual business leaders. Thereby, adding to productivity, morale, and a positive working environment/atmosphere. Jamie Nee '07 It was delightful to network among attendees, and exchanged conversations about China and other topics. I enjoyed listening to Professor Shirley Tang's talk at the Dinner Reception as well. Thank you for organizing a great social event and I'd love to do this again. Mary Truong '04 |

The Women's Initiative of the Merrimack Valley and the North Shore is looking for women who want to get involved in helping women in particular and the community in general. They're not looking for money, but rather for women who can give some of their time. The United Way has four impact areas. They are: Healthy Childhood Development, Increasing Youth Opportunities, Sustainable Employment, and Affordable Housing. They need women who can come together to form committees to decide the best way to approach these areas whether through education, volunteerism, or fundraising. Through the work of these committees the Initiative can reach out to prepare women who are entering the work force, help a teen who might be struggling with school and get them to the appropriate family services program, and increase the number of people gaining financial knowledge and achieving stability. Each committee will drive its own course, set its own goals, and its own schedule based on the vision and input of the team. I was fortunate enough to Co-Chair this year's breakfast to raise funds for Today's Girls, Tomorrow's Leaders. If you have a passion to help other women who are less fortunate than yourself and can donate some of your time they would appreciate hearing from you. Please call Debra DeVenne-Zarba '06 at 617.994.7154 if you'd like to hear about my experience or Co-Chair for the Initiative, Marilyn Corbin at 781 655 7612 or email Marilyn.L.Corbin@citizensbank.com.
The Advisory Board for Brook Farm Business and Service Career Academy is looking for new Board members for the 2008-2009 school year and beyond. Brook Farm maintains an Advisory Board to assist the faculty and administrators of the school to achieve the academic mission, to develop fundraising for both academic programming and scholarship opportunities, and to provide inroads into the industries of focus.
Fellow alumnus Kkat Dawson '06, is the Assistant Headmaster at Brook Farm. In addition, Stephen Finocchio '06 is currently the Board Chair, and Liem Tran '06 is a current Board member and prior Board Chair. No Board experience is necessary, nor is a direct link to business or finance. As we are a young Board, we are primarily seeking people with lots of energy that want to roll up their sleeves and get involved!

Job Postings |
|
The Emerging Leaders Program has set the policy that we would not post jobs because the companies we recruit for the program understandably are worried about retention of employees who they send to the program.
During these difficult economic times of downsizing we are making an exception. We would like to encourage this network of 295 to share any job postings you have on the Linked-in network user group: UMass Boston Emerging Leaders Program Alumni to assist those who have been laid off, or are facing the possibility of being laid off. To join, please visit the ELP Alumni Group on LinkedIn which was created by ELP Alum Darius X. Thompson - darius.thompson@gmail.com603-494-8006. |

Brief History of ELP |
|
The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
