October 2008

Issue:012

Dear ELP Alumni:

I hope you are enjoying the crisp fall weather. I am in denial that summer is over, but the upcoming October 23rd Luncheon is pushing me more and more towards reality.

It is a busy time for us, and you will see from this newsletter that we are forging ahead with team project presentations to Mayor Menino, the annual luncheon, a unique professional development opportunity offered through the Confucious Institute, a holiday gathering, 2 book projects, and a new website. And, I almost forgot, we we have admitted 48 new Emerging Leaders for the 2009 cohort:thirty-one are from the corporate sector, eleven from the non-profit sector, and six from state and local government.

Hopefully you also notice the adorable baby pictures in ELP on the Move. Congratulations to all the new moms and dads.

Best,

Andrea

Other Upcoming Events

WaterCoolerFootball
Wednesday, October 29th
ELP alums Diane Darling and Paul Francisco have teamed up to create WaterCoolerFootball, teaching people how to watch football games. The inaugural event was a HUGE success with people saying "I had a blast."

The idea was first given to Diane who heard people tell her that they were missing out on networking opportunities because they didn't understand the lingo or what people were talking about on Monday morning at the water cooler ..... Paul used to play for the Patriots and the Miami Dolphins.

It was originally men who gave Diane the idea - especially ones who are not jocks. Women and non-US nationals as well said they were feeling left out of the conversation. Just think about it ... ever been in a meeting when someone says "you dropped the ball" or "Let's not Monday morning quarterback."

Next event is Wednesday, October 29th. Click here for more info.

Center for Collaborative Leadership News

The ELP essay book project is going well, and incidentally, it has now turned into two book projects. Sherry and Pat are working with Palgrave to construct a book based on the submitted essays. Excerpts from the essays will be used to construct themes on leadership strategies. Information collected from the focus groups, ELP surveys, and ELP evaluations will be incorporated as well.

The other book we are working on will have the essays in their entirety, sectioned off by chapters based on the following themes: Voices of Inclusion, Leadership in their Own Voices, and Leadership and Work/Family Balance. We plan on publishing this book internally and using it to market the Emerging Leaders Program.

Request for data updates for inclusion in the book(s): please send Marcela Massarutto (marcela.massarutto@umb.edu) an email with your board memberships. We have some data, but we would like to keep up with the accuracy of our records.

Board Members Wanted!

The Advisory Board for Brook Farm Business and Service Career Academy is looking for new Board members for the 2008-2009 school year and beyond. Brook Farm is a Boston Public High School and is one of the four schools in the West Roxbury Education Complex.  The school is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF) which helps participating schools develop curriculum and programming around three principal themes: Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, and Information Technology.  Brook Farm maintains an Advisory Board to assist the faculty and administrators of the school to achieve the academic mission, to develop fundraising for both academic programming and scholarship opportunities, and to provide inroads into the industries of focus.

Fellow alumnus Katherine (Kkat) Dawson '06, is the Assistant Headmaster at Brook Farm. In addition, Stephen Finocchio '06 is currently the Board Chair, and Liem Tran '06 is a current Board member and prior Board Chair. No Board experience is necessary, nor is a direct link to business or finance.  As we are a young Board, we are primarily seeking people with lots of energy that want to roll up their sleeves and get involved!

Please contact Stephen Finocchio at swfinocchio@statestreet.com, or at 617 664 8396 if you are interested and/or want to learn more.

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork.
