ELP Requests for Assistance

Francois Fils-Aime '07 - The Dorchester YMCA is looking for additional board members.  Every year, the Dorchester YMCA provides over $150,000 in programs and services to families who otherwise cannot afford them. Our goal is to raise $50,000 every year.  Every dollar of that will directly benefit the families involved with the Dorchester YMCA. If anyone is interested, they can contact me via email francoisfilsaime@yahoo.com or 617-212-1850.  I am currently a board member for the Dorchester YMCA.

Michael James '06 - The Community Resource Design Center is organizing a Youth Safety Design event (June 21 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). We need to secure sponsorship so that we can have the resources to inspire and instruct our youth to use their creativity to collectively design solutions to community safety issues. We are trying to raise $20,000. My college has already contributed $3000 to the Community Resource Design Center for this event. We would like organizations to help sponsor the 100 diverse youth who will participate in the event. All levels of contributions are appreciated. Please call me if you have questions 617-585-0126.

In addition to professionals in fields related to the humanities, the board consists of members with expertise in program evaluation, grassroots organizing, marketing, finance, law, fundraising, and many other areas.  If you would like to nominate someone, or are interested yourself, please visit our website, www.mfh.org/foundation/wanted.htm, for more information and a description of board member responsibilities.

Cedric Sinclair '08- Please find the Boston Architectural College's call for entries for the 2%: Women of Color in Design exhibition which will be on display in the Boston Architectural College's McCormick Gallery, May 10th - May 17th during the 2008 AIA Convention "We The People."  The call for entries can be found on the BAC's homepage at

www.the-bac.edu. Entries are due Friday, April 25, 2008.

The exhibition is open to all women of color (i.e., African Americans, Latinas, Asians, etc) in the design professions, (i.e., architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, engineering, and furniture design).  Although African American women represent approximately .02% of the architecture field the number of all non-white women designers in the professions is closer to a figure representing 2%.  The exhibition is designed to underline how underrepresented all women of color are in the architecture profession.

I ask your assistance in communicating this opportunity for your peers to participate in this exciting exhibit celebrating all women of color in the design professions.  Feel free to forward to others in the profession who may be interested.  Please contact me if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this opportunity.  Thank you.

Cynthia Terwilliger '02 -  I will be running this year's Boston Marathon with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training.  It will be my first marathon and I am doing it to celebrate my 20 year anniversary of beating a non-Hodgkins lymphoma.  Please support the Society's research efforts and put an end to blood-related cancers by making a donation at:  http://www.active.com/donate/tntma/tntmaCTerwil.  Thank you for your support!

Jodi Wolin '06 of the Children's Trust Fund is running the 2008 Boston Marathon and raising at least $3,000 to prevent child abuse and neglect in Massachusetts.  Please visit www.firstgiving.com/jodiwolin to make a donation.  Contact Jodi if you wish to 'volunteer' for the day of the marathon to help cheer her along the 26 miles.

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, networking, and teamwork. Graduate Programs in Dispute Resolution

Dear ELP Alums:

As you consider next steps in your professional development, I hope you will include the UMass Boston Graduate Programs in Dispute Resolution in the mix of options you consider. The negotiation workshops that were part of your ELP training gave you a brief introduction to what we have to offer.

Conflict resolution skills are needed and valued in a broad range of careers. Our interdisciplinary curriculum combines theory and practice, offering students insights and skills for managing conflict in a variety of settings.  Our graduates are putting their skills to use in fields as diverse as business management, health care, and international affairs.

Established in 1986, our top-ranked program remains the only program in Massachusetts offering graduate degrees in this dynamic and growing field. Classes meet evenings and week-ends to accommodate the schedules of working professionals. You can earn a 36-credit Master of Arts degree or an 18-credit Graduate Certificate; you can also take individual classes without enrolling in a degree program.

I hope you will visit our web site www.disres.umb.edu to get more information, and encourage you to contact me to discuss how our programs can help you achieve your goals.
