Dear ELP Alumni:

Happy New Year! In early January we hope you received an invitation to participate in the ELP book project. Our goal is to create an anthology of leadership essays written by you. One of the deadlines for this project has past, but we are extending the deadline to February 15: we would like you to submit your 300-500 word proposal via email to leaders@umb.edu. Please give an overview of what your topic will be. Proposals will go to an editorial board for review. Call or email me if you have questions or if you did not get the mailing (617.287.3890). We really look forward to reading your essays.

Best,
Andrea Wight

ELP In the News

Dr. Sherry Penney is in the February 3, 2008 Boston Globe Magazine, in an article entitled "Road to Progress: How previous City to City trips affected Boston" written by Robert L. Turner. In 1998, Sherry traveled to Seattle with the City to City program. The focus of the trip was nurturing future business leaders. The result of that trip as Turner reports:

"Sherry Penney, former chancellor of UMass-Boston, says that Seattle's civic leadership - which created paths for young people to grow into higher-level positions - was a model for the Emerging Leaders Program founded by her and headquartered at UMass-Boston. That program has given special training to dozens of young executives in the city."

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program fellows enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a 10-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including networking, communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, and teamwork.
