Dear ELP Alumni:

I hope this newsletter finds you well and you are having a chance to get in some rest and relaxation this summer. The Alumni Board has been hard at work planning some great events over the next several months.  Please take a quick look at this newsletter to learn about some of our upcoming activities and be sure to mark your calendars!  Also, thanks to the work of ELP staff and a Project Team in the current cohort, I am pleased to report that an ELP Alumni Web site and database are currently in the works that will provide a new forum for keeping us linked together and informed. Stay tuned for more details soon!

The success of our Network is dependant upon all of us staying connected, and we welcome your thoughts and ideas on how we can continue to work toward this goal.  On behalf of the Board, we hope to see you at a future event!

Best,
Jen Waldner

New ELP Alumni Scholarship Fund!

Today, the Emerging Leaders Program is 244 strong, thanks to company sponsorship of employees and of the overall program to help provide scholarships for individuals who otherwise may have never been able to take advantage of this opportunity. Although company support has been a key factor to participating in the program, there are many who still must supplement their tuition out-of-pocket. While the program runs on a very tight budget, programming costs continue to rise. Not to mention the cost of events that are covered by the ELP that provide many of us access to local leaders across a broad spectrum of professions and industries.

With these, and other factors in mind, the ELP has established the ELP Alumni Scholarship Fund with generous donations from alumni. These contributions have helped to supplement tuition costs and other activities to keep the program running.

To make a contribution, make your check payable to the Center for Collaborative Leadership and designate it for the Scholarship Program.

For more information please call Andrea Wight at 617.287.3890 or mail your contribution to:

UMass Boston
Center for Collaborative Leadership
College of Management
100 Morrissey Blvd.
Boston, MA 02125

Your contribution will be tax deductible as the ELP is a non-profit 501(c)(3).

ELP Recruitment Update

by Mark O'Connor, Recruitment Chair

As the recruitment season for the 2008 cohort winds down, I wanted to take this opportunity to update everyone on our progress and to thank a few alumni.  During the months of May and June, Sherry Penney, Pat Neilson, Andrea Wight and yours truly hosted a number of candidates for next year's cohort at a series of informational sessions.  The lunch and breakfast meetings were held at Citizens Bank, The Boston Foundation and the United Way of Boston.  The turnout was outstanding and, as a result, we currently have 80 nominations from the following sectors: 45 corporate, 25 non-profit and 10 government.

In closing, I would like to extend a special thank you to the following alumni who attended the recruitment sessions.  Their enthusiasm for the Emerging Leaders Program is indeed contagious, which makes the job of recruitment that much easier:  David House, Marie Duprey, Jen Waldner, Deb DeVenne-Zarba, Pauliina Swartz and Isabel Hardy.  We couldn't have done it without your help - thank you!

Brief History of ELP

The Emerging Leaders Program is an executive training program for professionals in the Greater Boston area. In the program they will enhance their leadership skills and learn how to work effectively with other leaders toward specific goals. Each fall, a group of "fellows" is chosen for a ten-month program involving a weeklong seminar, followed by monthly meetings and team projects. At its conclusion, fellows have honed their individual leadership skills in several areas, including networking, communication, conflict resolution, the political process, entrepreneurship, media relations, and teamwork.
