Becca Johnson is a multi-media artist who lives and works in an old log cabin on Cold Mountain. While studying for her MFA in Italy, she developed a healthy mixture of respectful awe and rebellion while cowering below the masterpieces of western art. Though attached to traditional formal technique and aesthetic, Becca does not strive to create merely pleasing or technically proficient artwork, rather, she is interested in the footnotes of life and the experiences which may have fallen through the cracks of memory. She would rather portray the uncomfortable silences and awkward intentions of the characters in her paintings and sculptures than the pitch-perfect rendition of nostalgia. She is endlessly interested in the contradictions of human nature, and strives to depict the private synonyms of the human experience, such as buoyant loss, quiet chaos, courageous vulnerability, heavy sweetness, or beautiful shame. Becca is not comfortable working in one singular medium, and strives to concoct the emotional texture and impression of an idea through any material on hand. Her favorite medium, however, is the pencil.

 

 

Johnson earned her BFA in Ceramics from Western Carolina University in 2003 and an MFA in Painting

from American University in 2007.
