ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ROBBIE LIPE
This month, we're proud to feature local artist Robbie Lipe. Lipe's painting often feature collage elements that directly reference the relationship between humans and the natural world.
 Artist Statement
My art catches a moment in time and suspends it for the viewer so that
the viewer might examine the result of human intervention in nature.
We are dependent on nature, and yet we do little to protect it. A simple
piece of discarded plastic ends up in the ocean blocking the
photosynthesis
of diatoms needed to keep the ocean healthy.
Today
many humans live abstracted, decontexualized lives, in which nature
is often subjugated by the human-built environment. As a culture,
we risk losing that physical, tactile sense of connectedness to a place.
My art seeks to raise the question of the delicate balance between a
healthy relationship with nature and an unhealthy one. The question
of balance in our lives and on the earth is prevalent and urgent.
It
is respect for the natural world that actually shifts us toward
developing
a responsible approach to our cultural behavior, toward natural
resources,
and eco-conscious living and decision-making. Nature provides a source
for reflection, release, and renewal in a time when overproduction
results
in stress. It is necessary that we maintain a connection to this
fundamental
source of our creative, spiritual, and physical energies.
