Black Nativity is a holiday tradition near and dear to the hearts of many long time Penumbra supporters and friends. One of the favorites featured in this musical is "the quilting song," when five women sit together and stitch a quilt for Mary who has just birthed Jesus. This year we commemorate the textile artisans in our community who honor our ancestors by keeping record through a rich tradition of African American quilting. The Quilting Circle offered in partnership with The Textile Center is a unique way to create community, practice mentorship, gain friends and celebrate the bonds that stitch us all together-family. Led by master quilters and textile artists, participants come together to relax, share stories, and learn as the tradition is passed on. The final quilt will be showcased in this year's Black Nativity! Join us for an experience that is sure to be fun, enlightening and richly rewarding.
