The incident prompted a lockdown at Young Correctional Institution shortly before noon.

It ended shortly after 5:30 p.m. with the surrender of inmate Sye Newton,   No injuries were reported at time of this report.

The inmates involved, did not share a cell but were in the same pod.
Other inmates and staff were removed from the area during the standoff. Newton and his hostage were in an area alone while staff negotiated with him.

The pod where the incident took place is in the prison's west wing.

Line 10: Additional Information - Shortly after 4:30 p.m., Wilmington police officers were cleared to leave when corrections officials felt the situation had calmed down.

The prison's front gates were closed and the state Department of Correction's SWAT team left shortly after 2:15 p.m.

New Castle County Paramedics, who were called in at about 2 p.m., were recalled at 5:39 p.m.

The last prison hostage crisis in Delaware came on July 12, 2004, when an inmate took a prison counselor hostage and raped her in the Delaware Correctional Center in Smyrna.

That nearly seven-hour standoff ended when a Department of Correction rescuer hiding in the ceiling shot the inmate to death as he tried to stab the woman with a homemade shank.

Young Correctional Institution is a top-security facility in the northeast section of Wilmington. Opened in 1982, it formerly was known as Gander Hill Prison, the name of the neighborhood in which it is located.

The prison has a capacity for 1,380 inmates but now averages about 1,800, according to the Department of Correction Web site.
