NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO PROTECT AMERICA'S CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS KICKS OFF APRIL 14 IN DC

Xtreme CERTOps North America Tour and Expo will provide free training to correctional officers, help prepare for threats behind bars

Washington, DC - It's widely considered one of law enforcement's toughest beats: maintaining order and security inside the nation's prisons and jails. Throughout U.S. history, 527 correctional officers have died in the line of duty.

Now, in an unprecedented effort to ensure our nation's correctional officers are prepared to handle any emergency situation in America's increasingly crowded correctional facilities, the United States Corrections-Special Operations Group (US C-SOG) is embarking on a nine-month national road show providing free safety training to more than 2,500 correctional officers at approximately 1,000 correctional facilities.

nleomf212Supported in part by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the "Xtreme CERTOps North America Tour and Expo" starts Monday, April 14, from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, where the names of fallen correctional officers are engraved.

"In most correctional facilities, inmates outnumber officers by a ratio of seven to one or more. Ensuring our correctional officers have the most up-to-date training is essential to their safety and the safety of the people they protect," said Craig W. Floyd, NLEOMF Chairman.

"We are honored to kick off this nationwide tour at this solemn location," said Joseph Garcia, US C-SOG Senior Team Leader. "It is a sober reminder of our mission to protect the brave men and women who serve in our prisons and jails."

The tour's official vehicle is a 2008 FORD F450 with a customized 34-foot trailer-the CERT Tactical Rapid Deployment Vehicle (CT-RDV). This state-of-the-art tactical unit contains a mobile armory and the newest gear used in such tactical operations as hostage rescue, breaching and electronic surveillance for prison special operations.
