Line 9: Incident Narrative -  Three staff members at Santiam Correctional Institution were taken to Salem Hospital after a chemical smell prompted a prison evacuation

The incident was reported about 10:40 a.m. at the Salem facility, Approximately 450 inmates and staff were evacuated.

The three staff members were taken to the hospital were in stable condition.  Prison officials determined three inmates were about to clean a bathroom when the chemicals were accidentally mixed


Line 10: Additional Information - TOC has confirmed with the local FD that Salem Fire Department's hazardous materials team responded and determined the smell was from cleaning chemicals improperly mixed together, said fire spokesman Bill Holmstrom.

Inmates were taken to a secure recreational area while fire personnel cleared out the smell and prison operations resumed a few hours later.
