Background:
The Charles Avenue redesign process was initiated two years ago by the Central Corridor Friendly Streets initiative, which includes residents from the Frogtown and Hamline-Midway neighborhoods. Since 2011, the group has gathered input from nearly 900 local residents about how they'd like to make Charles better for walkers, bikers, drivers and all residents who live there. Their ideas were incorporated into the City of Saint Paul's redesign plans.
Proposed changes will help reduce automobile speed and make the route safer and more accessible for all users. Planned improvements include adding traffic circles, pavement markings and signage, and pedestrian refuge medians at busy intersections like Snelling, Lexington, Dale and Rice streets, making those nodes safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
Both the Frogtown Neighborhood Association and the Hamline-Midway Coalition support the proposed plan for Charles redesign, as does St. Paul Smart Trips. Let the City know that you do too.
