Share thoughts about proposed Charles Avenue design

Traffic Circle Charles and Albert
Current traffic circle at Charles and Albert; the plan includes nine more traffic circles.
The Central Corridor Friendly Streets initiative convened two public meetings in July to showcase and discuss proposed improvements along Charles Avenue that would make the street a safer route for people to travel on bike, foot or by car. The 3.4-mile stretch of Charles runs from Aldine Street to Park Street.

The improvement project is outlined in the Bike Walk Central Corridor Action Plan, adopted by the Saint Paul City Council in May 2010. Designers have revised the initial plans based on feedback from the public meetings. City Council will take public input and vote on the proposal September 5th.

Record-setting Commuter Challenge participation

Commuter Challenge 2012 Logo This year's Commuter Challenge set a new record with more than 17,500 registered participants. Thanks to all who vowed to drive alone less and use transit, bike, walk, carpool or telework more often. In addition to helping reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality for everyone, participants saved money, saved time and improved their health by choosing other modes.

Half of those who took this year's challenge normally drive alone, a huge number of people contributing to less traffic congestion and better air in our region.

Participants indicated how they planned to replace car travel, most using multiple modes as indicated below.
41% said they'd take bus, light rail or the Northstar train
21% said they'd bike
17% said they'd walk
13% said they'd share rides
6 % said they'd work from home

Two St. Paul commuters were among the 13 winners of the 2012 Challenge prizes, which included Amazon Kindles, Kindle Fires and Netbook computers.

Don't stop now. Keep it going! Track your trips online each week at www.mycommuterchallenge.org and become eligible for a monthly drawing for a $100 Target gift card.
Smart Trips hosts ride to Hmongtown Marketplace

A dozen riders joined us August 4th for our second group ride to experience bike-friendly Como Avenue, this time on a trip from the Como Lakeside Pavilion to the Hmongtown Marketplace.

The trip included a safety briefing by ride leaders and a guided tour of the Hmongtown Marketplace by its new manager. Riders were able to sample cultural foods and browse for items after the tour. For most, it was their first visit to the Marketplace and their first time riding on the trails around Lake Como and new bike lanes on Como between Dale and Marion.

Our Como Avenue ride in June took participants from the St. Anthony Park Library to the Mill City Farmer's Market. Both rides are part of our work with Bike Walk Twin Cities to promote bike/ped improvements along Como. We also created a Bike/Walk Como Avenue map highlighting bike routes and great destinations along Como.

Download a copy of the Biking & Walking Como Avenue map.

A big thank you to Boehm's Bike Shop for their generosity in helping reward participants in both our rides with prizes.
