Join Smart Trips at Grand Old Day - Sunday June 3rd
Start your 2012 Bike Walk Week off right by biking or walking to Grand Old Day, one of St. Paul's favorite community festivals. We'll be there sharing information about sustainable transportation options, registering people for the 2012 Commuter Challenge and helping cyclists practice putting their bike on the bus bike rack. Check out our location at Grand Old Day.
Biking Parking: is available at Grand and Ayd Mill, so you can lock up your bike and enjoy the festival. All bikes must be removed by 6 p.m.
Taking a Nice Ride: don't worry about finding a station to park your Nice Ride bike. They'll have a bike parking corral for Nice Ride bikes near the Smart Trips tent on the Ayd Mill Bridge. The first ten people each hour to show up at the Nice Ride Kowalski's station get a free bike helmet!
Take Transit for free: Don't worry about parking at all. Download your free transit pass to get to the event. The passes are good on all buses and light rail from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 3rd.
Volunteer with Smart Trips at Grand Old Day:
We're always looking for volunteers to help spread the word about sustainable transportation. It's not too late to join our table or parade crew on Sunday. Contact mary@smart-trips.org if you're interested. |

Complete Bridges report
|
Smart Trips convened an adhoc group that worked to develop a vision for how freeway crossings in St. Paul should look and function for bicyclists and pedestrians. The bike/ped group's efforts led to the design and pilot of a Complete Bridges Survey Tool, which was tested on two bridges that cross I94, the Snelling Avenue bridge and the Aldine Street bridge.
Our hope is that insight gathered through application of the survey tool to bridges in any neighborhood will help inform engineers and designers about the wants and needs of non-motorized users. Download the pilot survey results and survey tool.

Workshop gets city staff thinking about two wheels

City of Saint Paul staff recently participated in a day-long Bikeable Community workshop presented by MnDOT, the Minnesota Department of Public Health and the Bike Alliance of Minnesota. More than 20 staff from Parks and Recreation, Public Works and Planning and Economic Development learned how the "five Es"- education, engineering, encouragement, enforcement, evaluation and planning - work together to create bike-friendly communities.
The workshop included four hours of classroom instruction followed by a one-hour ride to observe and experience things discussed in the classroom. According to workshop co-organizer Emily Erickson, the city's sustainable transportation planner, feedback was positive, and it gave staff valuable insight into the many issues related to bicycling in the city.
St. Paul currently has a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Communities designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
Presenters Amber Dallman, Lisa Austin and Nick Mason piloted the workshop in St. Paul and plan to conduct it in other communities in the near future.
