Save BIG on your downtown St. Paul parking costs
St. Paul Smart Trips will soon be launching our new Parking $mart program, offering discounted parking in downtown St. Paul. We'll cover half the cost of a carpool or vanpool's monthly parking contract through the end of 2012 in one of three conveniently located downtown St. Paul parking ramps. Ramps include the Smith Avenue Transit Center, Capital City Plaza and the Jackson Ramp.
If you're new to carpooling, you'll not only save on parking costs, but also on gas, maintenance, and wear and tear on your car.
Start recruiting carpool partners today, and visit our website for information about how to qualify and register. Contact Damian Goebel at 651-224-8555, ext. 24 or damian@smart-trips.org to learn more.

Make the most of online trip planning resources
Metro Transit's website isn't just about buses. It offers a wide variety of resources, including multi-modal trip planning, guaranteed ride home registration, connections to Hourcar and Nice Ride hubs and ride matching assistance.
Employer Outreach Specialist Damian Goebel recently worked with two local social service agencies to train their employment counselors to help clients find ways to get to interviews, training or new jobs. He walked counselors through the better known Metro Transit online tools - ride matching, NexTrip, transit trip planner, and the interactive map - and some of the lesser known tools like pocket-sized bus schedules and bike locker information. "While these tools are vital for job seekers who may not have a car, they are just as accessible for anyone looking to leave the car at home," he explained.
Interested in training for your workplace? Contact damian@smart-trips.org to get the most out of the many resources offered by Metro Transit.

City Council approves St. Paul's first bike boulevard
The St. Paul City Council recently voted unanimously to approve development of the City's first bike boulevard on Griggs Street from Summit Avenue to Minnehaha Avenue. The bike boulevard will provide an important north-south connection for cyclists and pedestrians.
For details about the project, visit the City's Griggs Bikeway webpage, which includes an FAQ section addressing questions and concerns raised in the public hearing process. Construction is expected to begin this year.

Federal funding for sustainable transportation at risk
New federal transportation legislation is moving through the U.S. House and Senate. According to our local partner Transit for Livable Communities "House bills would cut off dedicated funding for transit, bicycle and pedestrian projects, and Safe Routes to School."
This is a critical bill that will potentially shape our future federal transportation priorities. We're doing our best to track progress and solicit action at critical junctures. If you're interested in monitoring the legislation more closely, follow Transit for Livable Communities or national advocacy organizations Transportation for America or the Alliance for Biking and Walking.
Join our Action Alert mailing list so you can voice your support for sustainable transportation.
