Protect safe bicycling and walking--urge your US Representative to support two amendments

Action Alert from our partners at Transit for Livable Communities:

After much anticipation, a new federal Transportation Bill was unveiled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. While this bill does provide long-term funding (5-years) and streamlines some programs, it takes some big steps backward.

The bill is being rushed through a Congressional committee tomorrow for review and mark-up. Please contact your US Representative today to urge support for 2 amendments to the transportation bill.

You can still add your voice.  Act Now

Read on for more details:
The proposed House bill massively cuts funding for Amtrak and removes incentives for states to properly maintain existing road and bridge infrastructure.

Of all the shortcomings, there are two that could have a major impact on Minnesota:
  • Eliminates dedicated funding for all types of bicycle and pedestrian improvements and repeals the highly successful Safe Routes to Schools program.
  • Encourages highway expansion instead of prioritizing repair and maintenance of the extensive road and bridge system we already have.
Two amendments will be offered on Thursday morning to address these gaps. Fortunately, two Congressmen from Minnesota (Reps. Cravaack and Walz) sit on this committee and can help improve the direction of the bill.

Your elected officials need to hear from you TODAY. Please take a moment to tell your Congressional Representative why safe roads and bridges, bike routes and sidewalks are important to you and your family! Then urge them to pass these views along to Representatives Cravaack and Walz who can support the amendments on Thursday morning.

Thank you for standing up for safe transportation for all Minnesotans!
