As an organization level goal, The Trustees of Reservations target net zero carbon.

HEAT PUMP HOT WATER HEATERS

Heat Pump Hot Water HeaterA recent NEHERS presentation by a US Department of Energy funded Building America team compared several heat pump hot water heater's performance in the field.  14 sites throughout the northeastern US were evaluated with data loggers for detailed analysis.

ZeroEnergy Design's Adam Prince also installed the General Electric GeoSpring heat pump hot water heater shown at the right for his own family of four.  (Not as part of the aforementioned analysis).

After 6 months of continuous operation set to 120 degrees and in 'heat pump only' mode, he is pleased with the system performance. Initial concerns regarding excessive dehumidification and noise proved to be unfounded when the system was installed with reasonable planning.

The consequences of cold air generated by the unit during the winter has yet to be determined in Adam's home, however the separate report by the Building America team finds the performance benefits far outweigh the performance drawbacks in measured field performance.
