Appleton Farms
Center for Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment
Ipswich, MA
The Appleton Farms Center for Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment is the heart of this dynamic property, which includes numerous agricultural and commercial structures on well over 1,000 acres. For over 200 years the original farmhouse has been home to generations of the Appleton family.
This commercial rehabilitation project will focus on conversion of 4,700 square feet of the house including two distinct elements, the original 1794 farmhouse and the 1872 west wing, both of which have been abandoned for over 15 years.
This LEED-registered project is undergoing a deep energy retrofit, including a full gut to the frame, fully updated building envelope, complete systems replacement, and the addition of renewable energy systems. Targeted energy performance is a 50% reduction when compared to Massachusetts Building Code requirements.
ZeroEnergy Design is providing energy modeling and HVAC design services.

| Multiple Certifications |
|
The NAHB Research Center, the sole certifying entity for the National Green Building Standard, has made achieving multiple certifications easiler. As a partner with the Department of Energy's Builder's Challenge Program, the NAHB Research Center now offers concurrent certification for both standards.
Effectively what this means is that new homes targeting certification under the National Green Building Standard will not only have the opportunity to be certified under the Builder's Challenge Program, but also the ENERGY STAR Program and the EPA's Indoor airPLUS Program. Because Indoor airPLUS is designed with typical ENERGY STAR verification methodology in mind and the other certifications require ENERGY STAR, the practical potential to achieve four separate certifications on one project becomes very real.
