Two rotary SQUIGGLE motors in a fiber positioner
New Scale Technologies has developed new rotary piezoelectric motors using our patented SQUIGGLE micro motor technology. The custom rotary micro motors were created for NASA JPL's "Cobra" fiber positioner, part of a spectrometer to be commissioned on the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii in 2013.

Each fiber positioner comprises two rotary micro motors in a two-stage theta-phi configuration (see figure). Overall positioner dimensions are 8 mm diameter x 85 mm length. The spectrometer will have 2400 positioners in a close-packed hex array.

Working with JPL's requirements, New Scale optimized these miniature rotary motors for high torque and precision. The first-stage motor has 0.06 degrees step resolution and stall torque of 3.0 mN-m: twice the torque of similar-sized DC micro motors (4.6 x 4.6 mm).

We can optimize rotary piezo motors for other design parameters, including smaller size or higher speeds. We can design and integrate custom rotary piezoelectric motors for use anywhere that rotary micro motors are used, including electronic locks, micro pumps, and scanning systems.

See the news release for the custom motors' performance specifications.

See the application note and technical paper for details about the Cobra fiber positioner and the custom rotary motor development. The technical paper was presented at the 2009 IEEE Aerospace Conference and is posted with permission from IEEE.

~  New housing makes mounting linear SQUIGGLE motors a "snap"
SQL-1.8-SS SQUIGGLE motor
A new stainless steel housing for the SQL-1.8 linear SQUIGGLE  micro motor simplifies mounting of this patented piezoelectric motor - still the world's smallest linear motor - into OEM products.

The model SQL-1.8-6-12-SS SQUIGGLE motor measures only 2.7 x 2.8 x 6 mm including the new housing. This is still 25% to 50% thinner and up to ten times smaller in length x width than competing micro motors.

With new mounting tabs and a solid bottom surface, the SQL-1.8-6-12-SS SQUIGGLE motor is easily integrated into high-volume miniature products such as tiny optical systems, medical devices, micro-robotic instruments and more.

A variety of suggested mounting techniques include the use of snap clamps to hold the mounting tabs; epoxy or adhesive tape to bond the bottom of the housing to a system structure; and several different screw-on clamping options. A new application note describes the various mounting methods in detail, and a 3D CAD file is available for download.
