SQUIGGLE motor - get a free mechanical sample at our booth
Stop by our booth at one of the events below, and pick up your FREE mechanical sample of the world's smallest linear motor. Amaze your friends!

When we say we make "ingeniously small" motion systems... well, you almost have to see it to believe it. Now here's your chance. Visit us at these upcoming events to see for yourself just how small and how ingenious these little devices are. We'll be showing live demos of:
  • The SQUIGGLE motor - the world's smallest linear motor.

  • The TRACKER position sensor - smallest, highest-resolution mini encoder on the market.

  • The SQUIGGLE Zoom Module - an integrated system that incorporates two SQUIGGLE motors, two TRACKER position sensors and a dual-motor drive ASIC - a compact reference design for mini cameras.

  • SQUIGGLE actuator modules - SQUIGGLE motors with integrated limit switches for electronic locks, intelligent fasteners and other applications.
We also can give you a "sneak preview" of our newest technology developments - including miniature custom UTAF actuators, a reduced-voltage SQUIGGLE motor, and a rotary SQUIGGLE motor.

~ TDK-EPCOS and New Scale partner for greater miniaturization
reduced-voltage SQUIGGLE motor
A new technology partnership with TDK-EPCOS is fueling New Scale's next-generation piezo micro motor development. On tap are a reduced-voltage (2.8 V) version of New Scale's smallest SQUIGGLE motor (shown at right) and a new ultra-thin actuator family (UTAF) of motors.

TDK-EPCOS is a EUR 6.8 billion global manufacturer of electronic products, with particular expertise in manufacturing multilayer piezoelectric ceramic elements. The company routinely produces millions of multilayer piezoelectric actuators per month to demanding automotive quality standards.

New Scale uses these ceramics to design and build miniature motors, actuator modules and motion systems. Our common goal is to drive system miniaturization: to deliver the world's smallest complete motion systems encompassing actuators, sensors and electronics.

The reduced-voltage SQUIGGLE motor can be powered directly by a battery of less than 2.8 V, thanks to the use of TDK-EPCOS multilayer ceramics. This eliminates the need for a boost circuit and reduces the size of the drive electronics by 75%, bringing down the total system size. The reduced-voltage motor and its ASIC driver will be available from New Scale in Q3 2009 to selected system development partners.

UTAFFor even smaller systems, the first prototypes in the UTAF family of custom piezo motors (shown at left) measure less than 2 mm thick. This size is achieved by integrating multiple actuator functions and independent electrical connections into a single co-fired ceramic component.

~  TRACKER position sensor eval kits available online
TRACKER evaluation pack
TRACKER position sensor evaluation kits are now available for purchase online.

The TRACKER position sensor is a robust, cost-effective alternative to miniature optical encoders. Offering the smallest size, long travel and highest resolution, the TRACKER is a unique magnetic sensor with integrated, on-chip digital encoder for direct digital output via I2C interface, without the need for external pulse counters. The kit includes:
  • A model TRK-1T02 position sensor (8.5 x 11.5 x 1.61 mm)
  • An 11-mm long linear magnet (for 7 mm stroke)
  • MC-31MB interface card with USB cable
  • AC power supply with cables and adapters
  • Evaluation software
