Dear Colleague

Welcome to this quarterly issue of New Scale News, your update on miniature motion technology and applications from New Scale Technologies.

It's been a couple of months since we met at Electronics West and we've been busy. Want to stay informed? Subscribe to New Scale News (use the "sign up" button at the left) to receive this newsletter every quarter.

New micro-actuator module is smaller, offers longer life
We have added a smaller, lower-power micro-actuator module to our product line. The new SQL-M-1.8 SQUIGGLE module measures ~13 x 4 x 4 mm and uses ~ 300 mW when moving. It is self-locking and uses zero power to hold its position.

This new module is about 35% smaller than our original SQL-M-3.4 model. It also has significantly greater power efficiency, higher speed, and longer lifetime (more than 500,000 cycles).

SQL-M modules can replace solenoids, stepper motors and DC motors in applications where smallest size and lowest power draw are needed. They are less than half the size of solenoids or stepper motors, draw less power, and offer longer stroke with comparable force.

ICs fromaustriamicrosystems support SQUIGGLE motors
New Scale has formed a strategic partnership with austriamicrosystems (SWX: AMS), a leading designer and manufacturer of high performance analog ICs. Austriamicrosystems has invested $6 million in New Scale in exchange for a 25% minority share of the company.

By reducing the supporting electronics to single ICs, we can create complete motion systems on the same scale as our miniature SQUIGGLE motors.

This partnership enables us to produce a new line of disruptively small motion systems with best-in-class precision and power efficiency. Tapping austriamicrosystems' expertise, we can provide complete 'closed loop' motion solutions that incorporate micro motors, drive electronics and position sensors in extremely small modules, ready for integration into OEM products.

Patent awarded to Hoffman, Culhane and Henderson of New Scale
New Scale received its third US patent for its miniature piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motors. The patent covers design improvements for high-volume manufacturing, a simplified electronic drive method that reduces power requirements by 50%, and a miniaturized auto focus and optical zoom module.

Tamron logo
New Scale has expanded its SQUIGGLE motor license agreement with Tamron Co. Ltd., a leading global manufacturer of high-precision optics and optical assemblies.

The new multimillion dollar agreement grants Tamron license to manufacture SQUIGGLE motors and integrate them into Tamron products at its high-volume precision manufacturing facilities in Japan and other parts of Asia. Tamron may also produce SQUIGGLE motors as a contract manufacturer for New Scale as needed.

Tamron has a 50-year history of precision, high-volume manufacturing and a reputation for high quality. This is a milestone in the build-up of global manufacturing and supply chain capabilities for SQUIGGLE motors, both at New Scale's US manufacturing center and at our partners' facilities close to customers around the world.
Elektronik Produkt des Jahres logo
New Scale Technologies' patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor was selected as one of the most outstanding products of the year by the readers and editors of Elektronik, Germany's leading electronics design magazine. The SQUIGGLE motor took second prize in the automation category.
