Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification News and Information
February 2010 |
|
|
Greetings!
Its already March!
February was a very busy month, so here it is the first of March and I am just getting the February news out. There were many events in February, with World of Concrete kicking off the month. Attendance was low but the exhibitors seemed like they were making some good quality contacts. I spent an afternoon with a delegation from Italy who were interested in post-tensioning, so all-in-all it was a good show.
After World of Concrete came the precast show here in Phoenix (I know that they are the "competing system", but sometimes they post-tension all those pieces together), followed by the National Concrete Bridge Conference, also here in Phoenix. The NCBC was a great conference with some very good presentations on post-tensioning design, evaluation, and construction. Again, attendance seemed low which is understandable with travel budgets being what they are today, but the knowledge and information sharing at this conference are unparalleled in the bridge industry. I will work on finding out if the presentation CD that was distributed will be made available for sale any time soon. It would be a great resource to anyone in the bridge industry.
Sincerely,
--Jim Rogers

ACI Convention - March 21st - 25th in Chicago, IL
ACI conventions are dedicated to improving the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of concrete structures by offering 300+ committee meetings, 30+ technical and educational sessions, a number of social events, and an opportunity to visit with exhibitors. During the committee meetings, attendees have the opportunity to provide input on concrete industry codes, specifications, and guides. These are open for all to attend.
Additionally, ACI conventions offer numerous forums so you can network and connect with some of the most well-informed individuals in the concrete industry. Expect to meet with engineers, architects, contractors, educators, manufacturers, and material representatives from all over the world.
Many committees relate to the design and construction of post-tensioned concrete, including the joint ACI/ASCE Committee 423 which meets on Monday, March 22nd, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Times Are Tough - Stay Certified!
It is still not a good time for our industry. Many people are out of work. The last report in Engineering News Record put national construction unemployment at over 26%. During these times it is important to maintain your qualifications and stay certified so you are prepared for the work that does come up. We have made a decision to stop charging for certification renewals for anyone who expired in 2009 or who is expiring in 2010. We would rather see everyone stay certified so that the workforce is ready when things recover. Renewal still requires fulfilling the continuing education requirements, but there are many opportunities to get this done.
The continuing education requirements state that you must earn and report credits when you renew your certification. This is to help insure that people certified under the Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification program are trained, skilled, and knowledgeable. Many of the credits needed can be earned through post-tension field experience, but a minimum of at least 2 hours must be earned in classes or seminars (called Level 2 credits). Sources for these can include journeyman upgrading classes taught at your local apprenticeship school, supplier training programs, and other industry sponsored seminars. To download a complete renewal package with instructions, click here.
We also recently sent out a new proposal to Ironworker Apprenticeship Schools giving some new options for utilizing Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification. If you are a qualified facility and did not receive a proposal or would like a copy, please contact jim@ptconcrete.com. |
