Greetings!

There are a number of things happening with our Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification Program, and we have decided that we need to do a better job of keeping you informed and up to date. We are introducing the launch of this newsletter to do just that. This newsletter will now go out monthly, on the 25th of each month. This will give everyone a predictable source of information about the program.

Of course, we will continue to keep the new web site updated (read more below) and those of you that use RSS feeds can subscribe to the post-tension certification news feed by going to the web site, or clicking here. You can also click on "update profile" at the very bottom of this newsletter to change the categories that you receive emails about.

There have been a number of changes to the program in the last few months, so we will summarize them here in this first issue of the newsletter. Some of you have also requested information on where the upcoming training and testing is being held, so that will be included in the future issues as well. If anyone has any comments, suggestions, or requests, just let me know and we will try to accommodate them.

Sincerely,
--Jim Rogers

New Web Site is Launched
Redesigned site introduces the new logo and certification icon

PT Icon
The web site at www.ironworkercertification.com has undergone a redesign. The home page for the site is now a portal to both the post-tensioning certification and the soon to be launched rebar certification program. Clicking on the post-tension section takes you to the PT site, which shows off the new program logo and the new certification icon (shown here). The site contains up to date news and information about the program, and an RSS feed for the news section. Just click on the RSS icon to subscribe.

The new site also contains a redesigned password protected area, where committee members and approved exam administrators can log in and download forms, schedule exam sessions, and view frequently asked questions.
First Batch of Renewal Applications is Processed
Renewal Applications Submitted Within Weeks of Being Made Available
After the renewal requirements were revised and approved by the Scheme Committee, we designed new forms and instructions and posted them on the web site. The first batch of completed applications has been received and processed! The strong early showing of renewal applications is an indicator that projects are requiring people to be certified in order to work. The renewal package can be downloaded from the web site's download page, or by clicking here.

Recently Approved Changes

Program Updates are Approved, More to Follow Soon
The certification program has been successfully used to certify thousands of people and meet requirements of projects throughout North America. For the last three years, contractors have utilized this certification program to qualify the people they use to install post-tensioned reinforcing on their projects. Owners and engineers, from Port Authorities and DOT's, to building and parking structure designers, have reviewed our program's requirements and approved our program as meeting their requirements and expectations. This has all been possible due to the rigorous guidelines and high standards set by our program from day 1.

One of the original sites set by the program was that it should be designed to meet the requirements of ISO 17024, a rigorous standard for how certification programs should operate. In the U.S., it is ANSI that is charged with officially accrediting programs to this standard. In an effort to continually improve our program and work towards the ANSI accreditation, we constantly re-evaluate the program through internal audits and psychometric reviews by an outside consultant from the Maryland Department of Education. As a part of this process, we identify areas for change or improvement.

Most recently we have revised the renewal process to make it less burdensome, while still insuring that certified people retain their knowledge through ongoing industry involvement and continuing education. We also adopted an expanded code of conduct, which all applicants must agree to follow as a condition of certification. This agreement is now included on all applications and renewal forms.

In the near future the Scheme Committee will be reviewing some of the requirements related to the scope of the training that is required in order to become certified. The current language relating to apprenticeship will be reviewed to see if it is more appropriate to spell out specific training required before applying for certification (safety, for example). If any of the exam administrators have any thoughts or comments, use the discussion board in the log-in area of the web site to post them for review. Others can email me at jim@ptconcrete.com.
Certification Program Passes 3000
 PT Cert Logo
First Three Years are a Success
The program now has over 3,200 people certified in the United States and Canada. This includes people certified in single strand unbonded (monostrand) and in bonded (multi-strand and bar) post-tensioning. With several hundred more tests already scheudled to be conducted in the next two months, the programs future looks great. We also recently added a number of new exam administrators in cities were exams have not been being conducted which should help to further expand the program.
