Dear Readers,
|
WE DID IT! Thanks to the support of many of you, we have raised the $50,000 we needed for our all-or-nothing Challenge Grant for our donor relations program. A special, heart-warming gathering of families and friends joined their efforts to contribute as well. The Hiruko Wellness Center in Los Altos, CA conducted a Power and Fun Under the Sun event benefiting KIDPOWER that raised almost $7,000! The Hiruko community's contribution put us over the top for achieving this landmark and on our way to meeting our next challenge.
The "PowFunUnSun" event was created and organized by Natalia Gabrea, a KIDPOWER instructor who, with her husband Jorge, also owns Hiruko Wellness Center. Natalia and Jorge donate space in this beautiful martial arts school for KIDPOWER's Silicon Valley Office. They created an outstanding opportunity for their martial arts students to gather pledges -- much like others get pledges for a walkathon -- in support of their participating in the event's many fun health and wellness activities such as martial arts, yoga, chi gong, and KIDPOWER skills. The young student in the photo above went, along with his mother, door to door in his neighborhood to collect pledges to benefit KIDPOWER. He is looking very serious as he stands with his Hiruko teachers Natalia and Jorge, his KIDPOWER instructor for the day, Mike (who is also our newest padded instructor!), and myself. For more photos, click here. The money raised by The KIDPOWER Challenge is at work right now building a strong donor relations program: it's launched our $2 million KIDPOWER Bridge to Safety, which will fund 8 projects necessary for greatly increasing our organization's ability to share our People Safety skills with far more families and communities, especially youth in need, for decades to come. With great appreciation and best wishes to each of you,

Irene van der Zande KIDPOWER Executive Director/Co-Founder

The Art of Possibility
|
The Art of Possibility: Transforming Personal and Professional Life is a wonderful book written by Benjamin Zander, an orchestra conductor and Rosamund Stone Zander, who is a therapist.
The two authors share a wealth of stories and practices from their special perspectives to help the reader develop ways of thinking to prepare for life's challenges and make the most of one's life. To give a sample, here is an excerpt from an interview with Roz, who is the therapist: At the beginning of our book, I tell the story of going white water rafting up in northern Maine some years go.

Tobacco Refusal Tactics
|
Peer pressure is one of the main reasons why young people start smoking, in spite of all the education they've received about how dangerous smoking is for your body and for the people around you. As a result, more and more experts are recommending that refusal skills specific to being pressured to smoke be taught and practiced with young people, starting by middle school. |
