Dear Readers,
Our vision is to work together with people like each of you to create cultures of caring, respect, and safety for everyone.

We have received e-mail messages from young people from all over the world who feel desperate because they are being bullied and who feel alone because they believe that they have no adults to talk to.

IreneWe write to them with ideas about how to avoid or stop the bullying, how to persist with busy distracted adults in asking for help, and how to find other adults who might be able to help them.

People of any age who feel alone, ashamed, and desperate are likely to create a host of problems for themselves and potentially for others. Yet, help is so often close by if young people have the skills to be courageous in finding adults to approach and in being persistent even when an adult is impatient or annoyed at first.

Hopefully, parents or other adult family members will be the best choice for getting help. But neighbors, teachers, youth group leaders, counselors, ministers, priests, rabbis, coaches, martial arts teachers, or the parents of friends are also all possible allies to a young person going through a hard time.

Even if we think they already know, each of us can take a moment to tell the young people in our lives that no matter how busy we are and no matter how many mistakes they might have made, we want to know if they have problems. We can say that we will do our best to listen without lecturing and to help them find good solutions.

Thank you for your commitment to creating safety for yourself, your family, and your community.

Wishing you a wonderful start to your summer,

Tips for Summer Safety
To Do List

Summer is a time of change for many families. End of school activities, vacations, camp, overnight visits, jobs, outings with family and friends, or just having more "home alone" time give young people important opportunities to have fun and to grow. Here are a few simple steps parents and other caring adults can follow to help their children stay safe while having fun and learning during these adventures.

Another Kind of Pollution: Addressing Sexual Harassment
Sexual HarassmentEvery time Marcia glanced up from her desk at the office, her co-worker across the room was staring at her. He didn't say anything- he just looked at her in a way that made her feel as if he were trying to see through her clothes with his eyes. When she asked him to stop, he looked hurt. "It's a free country," he said.
FamilyPower Weekend Workshop
August 9-10, 2008 in Berkeley
Girl with Padded InstructorTake one weekend this summer to build "People Safety" skills with your family, developing tools to make life's adventures safer and more fun.  This comprehensive annual weekend workshop will prepare families to set boundaries, make safety plans, protect themselves from harm, and communicate more effectively as a team. Children ages six and up, teens, and adults in a family will each have tailored experiences so they can learn and practice skills in contexts relevant to their own lives.  Because the skills fit together, families  will leave with a shared framework for continuing to talk about and practice skills for being safe with people in a way that is positive, productive, and enjoyable.

Parenting with KIDPOWER*
Offered through Cabrillo College in Aptos
In this workshop, parents and other caregivers have the opportunity to learn the KIDPOWER approach for introducing and practicing self-protection and personal safety skills with the young people in their lives. These skills include using your awareness, acting with confidence, moving away from trouble, checking and thinking first, getting help, and what to do in emergencies.

Find answers to questions such as, "How can we teach our younger children to be safe without scaring them?" and "How can we prepare our older children to balance their need for increased independence with their safety?"

* This workshop is being offered through Cabrillo College Extension. To register, please visit the Cabrillo College Extension page.
