Dear Readers,
|
These two photos show our KIDPOWER skills being taught at a girl's orphanage in Peru by our instructor Miguel Alymeda. Miguel is a member of our Reaching Out Project, through which KIDPOWER International trains professionals working with charitable organizations serving youth in danger in very low-income countries to incorporate our People Safety skills into their programs.
At KIDPOWER, we are using the term People Safety to explain what we do. By People Safety, we mean how individuals of all ages and abilities can use their own power to be safe with people. Safe with their feelings. Safe with their actions. Safe with others. Safe with themselves.
In our almost twenty years of dedication to this work, we have learned that it is important to identify the skills we teach in a positive way rather than using problem-based language such as stranger danger, sexual abuse prevention, bullying prevention, or violence prevention.
You wouldn't think of teaching children "burning prevention" rather than Fire Safety or "drowning prevention" rather than Water Safety. So why should People Safety be any different?
KIDPOWER is committed to promoting the teaching of People Safety skills in an empowering effective way for families, schools, organizations and communities around the world.
In your year-end giving plans, please keep KIDPOWER in mind. Making a gift is easy - just use our Donate Now button to the left. And remember that every dollar you give helps keep kids safe!
Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season,

Irene van der Zande KIDPOWER Executive Director/Co-Founder

Holiday Boundaries - Erika Leonard, Assistant Director of Community Education
|
One of my favorite childhood holiday memories brings me back to the age of eight, being tickled by my uncle whom I rarely saw, a man who approached superhuman status in my mind. I would escape the tickles, regain my breath, and crawl back for more. I was overjoyed that he would sit on the floor, like a kid, and really BE with my brother and me. I loved every moment and am grateful for the memory...
At the same time, touch and attention have the potential to be irritating, invasive, offensive, or downright hurtful.

KIDPOWER, Supernanny Expert! KIDPOWER Honored with Supernanny Expert Status
|
Supernanny has reviewed KIDPOWER and declared KIDPOWER a "Supernanny Expert". For those of you who don't know, Supernanny is a TV show in the UK and the US that is hugely popular - sort of a reality TV for parenting. "Supernanny" goes into different homes where the challenges don't have to be invented because they already exist with children whose behavior is out of control and adults who lack parenting skills - and Supernanny demonstrates how adults can take charge and create healthier, happier families.
The Supernanny.us.com and Supernanny.co.uk websites offer a wealth of resources to help parents be more more effective in managing their daily lives with children in positive and powerful ways.
