Finding an After-School Family
| |
Devonte, a Richmond teenager, knew that he didn't want to get into trouble when he wasn't in school. "I don't want to end up selling drugs," he said. "I just want to be safe."
September is around the corner -- now is a great time to start thinking about where your children and teens will spend their time when not in school. After-school and youth programs provide safe havens for kids, and the experience can improve their grades, give them leadership opportunities, and turn them into role models. If you need a list of programs in our region, call 2-1-1 for help.
Your support of United Way made it possible for Devonte and more than 8,000 other youths to participate in programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs, the Y, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
THANK YOU for creating opportunities for a better life for our region's youth! |
| Join the Smart Beginnings Network | |
The future of our region lies in the hands of our children. United Way is investing in our youngest citizens through the Smart Beginnings initiative -- and if you are committed to preparing every child, from birth through age 5, to succeed in school and in life, we need you to join us!
Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is holding quarterly
Network meetings, and you're invited. You'll have an opportunity to learn what's being done to improve our region's early childhood systems and share your opinions and perspective on the issue.
The first meeting is Friday, August 6, 8:30 to 11 a.m., at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, 701 E. Byrd St., Richmond. The featured speaker is Lisa Specter-Dunaway, President/CEO of CHIP of Virginia. The meeting will also include small-group discussions. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Jacque Hale at halej@yourunitedway.org.
Mark your calendar for the next meetings as well! They will be November 5, 2010 and February 4, 2011. |
