You Make the Difference
Your support ensures our region's youth succeed in school and life.

As the new school year approaches, we are proud to bring you an example of how your support makes a difference in the area of Education. United Way is leading a coalition of youth organizations, POST, to give every school age youth in greater Richmond the opportunity to participate in quality out-of-school programs.

Thanks to you, our region's youth will achieve their potential and succeed in both school and life.

How I LIVE UNITED
Special Feature

Jaclyn delivering food

When Jaclyn was about to turn ten years old recently, she told her mom about her plan for what turned out to be a wonderfully inspiring birthday celebration.

With her best girlfriends invited for a sleepover, Jaclyn asked that they not bring her birthday presents. Instead, she asked them to bring gifts (food, treats, supplies) for the dogs and cats at the Hanover Humane Society.

The morning after the sleepover, Jaclyn and her friends personally delivered the gifts and toured the shelter. "The parents were incredibly generous and the whole experience made quite an impression," said Victoria Bosse, Jaclyn's mom. Jaclyn and her friends thought it was the best birthday celebration ever.

That's how Jaclyn LIVES UNITED.
Post School Day
Consider some of the challenges facing our youth.

Live UnitedThe hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on school days are peak hours for youth to commit crimes, become victims of crime, be in a car crash, or use drugs or alcohol. Each year in our region, almost 1,500 students who enter ninth grade fail to graduate with their peers four years later because they drop out of school. In the city of Richmond, one in ten students does not have plans after graduation.

The Partnership for Out of School Time (POST), a United Way-led coalition of youth organizations, is working to give every school age youth in greater Richmond the opportunity to participate in quality out-of-school time programs. Even more, POST is focusing heavily on the professional development of the staff involved to ensure that all who engage with youth are knowledgeable about their development and what they need most.
